| Scene 5 Toms apartment. Tom is alone, looking into the mirror. After a few beats, he turns and looks at the white door. He approaches it, as if to open it. As his hand grips the doorknob, there is a knock at the door. Tom pauses, there is another knock. Tom goes to open the front door. It is Gabe. Gabe: Hey. Tom: Hey. Gabe: (looking past Tom) Is she around? Tom: No, shes not. Come on in. Gabe enters. Gabe: Sohow are you? Tom: Alright, I suppose. Ive been better. Gabe: Whats wrong? Tom: Judy. Gabe: Ah, I see. (There is an awkward silence, it is obvious Gabe is trying to hold back, but can no longer contain himself.) Look, youve been dating her for three months now, and for those three months you havent been happy once. I tried to give her a chance, you know I did, but seriously, you need to end this. Youd be better off without her and you know it. Tom: You dont even know what the problem is yet! Gabe: Do I need to know? Tom: Well, before you place all the blame squarely on her, it might be helpful to know. Gabe: Alright, so whats the trouble? Tom: I justI have this feeling. (Looking into the mirror.) I think shes more interested in my social circle than she is in me, you know? I mean I know I sound arrogant, but I think shes more interested in dating my fame, my prestige, than she is dating me. Gabe: What makes you think that? Tom: She always wants me to introduce her to my writing famous friends. Just last week we were at a party and she spent the whole time talking to that playwright Silverman. Gabe: Oh, the guy thats always talking about the pressures of being a Tony award winning playwright on Broadway? Tom: Yeah, that asshole. Gabe: Ew, how could she stand him? Tom: Thats just it; she loves knowing all these people. She wants me for my connections, thats all. Gabe: Well, confront her about it then. Let her know it bothers you. Tom: Shed just deny it; tell me it wasnt true, blah blah blah. Its probably in my head, you know? Im sure thats it. Gabe: Whatever. You know its not in your head, but you wont say anything about it, you- There is a knock at the door, Tom goes to answer it. It is Judy. Tom: Oh, hi Judy. Judy: Hey babe. Hey Gabe. Gabe: Hey. Tom: Come on in. You guys wanna order out? Gabe: Oh, no thanks. I gotta go. Gabe exits. Judy: Well, he left in a hurry. Tom: Yeah, hes a busy man. Care to sit down? Judy: Actually, I have to use your bathroom real quick. Be right back. Tom: Ok. She exits up right, leaving her purse on the counter on its side, a folded piece of paper falls out, along with a few condoms. Tom takes the paper, unfolds it, and begins to read. He finishes and puts it down, visibly shaken. Judy returns from the bathroom. Judy: Alright. So, you want to go out tonight? Tom: (ignoring her) I tried to call you at home this afternoon, whereve you been? Judy: Oh, I was at lunch with some friends. Tom: (holds up condom) And you needed these? Judy: Wellthat was for us ba- Tom: (getting angrier) And the letter from Silverman? Is that for me too? Well then Ill have to give him a call later. Judy: What were you doing in my purse anyway? Tom: I wasnt, it just fell outwhy am I defending myself?? Youre the one sleeping with Silverman! Christ, hes thirty years older than you!! My God, is that what you do with all my friends? Judy: Look, Tom, it was just Tom: Dont tell me it was a one-time thing, Judy, I dont want to hear it. Judy: Then what do you want to hear? Im sorry? Tom: Just go. Thats all. Go, maybe Ill call you later. Judy: Alright. Judy exits. Tom looks into the mirror. Tom: She doesnt know what she hasha, like any of them do. I wonder if theyd even notice Lights down, we hear the shattering of a mirror. |
