| History of the school: The Community of the Sisters of the Church opened "Sefton Park School" on May 1st 1894 with 17 pupils. By 1905, the roll had risen to 377, and the name changed to "Arundel Central School" in 1924. After the 1944 Education act, the name became "St Hilda's C of E Secondary Commercial Technical School", and, eventually, "St Hilda's C E High School" before its move to a new building in Croxteth Drive, Sefton Park, in 1967 when there were 361 pupils including 32 in the sixth form. The Diocese persuaded St Hilda's to become comprehensive in 1980 with a four-form intake, and numbers have subsequently increased to 864 with 186 in the sixth form. On becoming Grant Maintained in January 1995, the school began a building programme to improve its educational facilities, and this is continuing after returning to Voluntary Aided status with the addition of a Drama Studio and new library which was officially opened on April 15th 2005. The school has now gained Business and Enterprise College status. Recent league tables have rated St Hilda's one of the best three schools in Greater Merseyside for added value, and among the best one hundred comprehensive schools in the country on results. We were awarded DfES achievement awards for each three years it was available, and our subsequent results have been excellent. In recent value-added tables, St. Hilda's was one of only two schools in Liverpool (including selective schools) which added significant value from age 11 to age 16, and recent Key Stage 3 tables rated us 187th out of all the thousands of schools in the country! The school has no plans to increase the intake, but wishes to improve the education offered to all pupils by developing its status as a Business and Enterprise College, reflecting the strong business tradition of the old St. Hilda's and moving forward to meet the needs of future pupils. |
