Comments:
In our sixth match we
played Glenmore Park Black. Ethan Willard was the captain for the day. We lost the toss and were sent in to
bat. Glenmore Park Black won the match
on first innings.
Our opening batsmen performed well, with Cameron Findley (0 runs)
staying in for 22 minutes, taking the shine from the ball and removing their
most dangerous bowlers. Ben Pagett (16 runs) once again batted strongly and elegantly
and is developing into a fine opening batsman.
Brett South (53 not out) played the innings of the season for our
team, hitting the bowlers to all corners of the ground and encouraging his
batting partners. The innings was a
pleasure to watch and it was great to see the team supporting Brett from the
boundary. Michael Lovegrove (2 runs) stayed in for 44 minutes and supported
Brett well, and Ethan
Willard (0 runs) helped support
as well. Keegan Jones (1 run), who volunteered
to play from the under 10s, stayed in and scored a run and Jayden Kostrubiec (4 not out) scored his first boundary for the year.
After 33 overs,
we had scored 5-115, our best score of the year and a score that made us
competitive.
Our bowlers performed well, with Jalay Bell (4-1-1-8) again taking a spectacular caught and
bowled, his third in 2 weeks. Brett South (5-2-0-5) bowled well but without any luck and Jayden Kostrubiec (4-0-0-9) bowled steadily as always. Cameron
Findley (2-0-0-10) returned his
best bowling figures all year, while Adam Gradidge (2-0-0-13) is improving each week. Michael
Lovegrove (3-0-0-15) and Owen
De Silva (3-0-0-20) bowled extra overs well at a time when the Glenmore Park batsmen were
going after the ball. Ben Pagett (4-0-0-16) and Ethan Willard (4-0-0-17) both bowled
well and kept runs to an acceptable level.
Keegan Jones (2-1-1-2) bowled excellently and aggressively. In a thrilling and competitive end to the
game, Glenmore Park Black won in the last 2 overs,
scoring 3-121 from 33 overs.
Last week our batting had let us down.
This week our batting and bowling was excellent and placed us in a competitive
position and I was really pleased at our improvement. However, our fielding fell apart after the 20
over mark this week and eventually cost us the match. Our team started to field lazily, allowing
balls to roll between our legs or go right past us. Players dropped catches or ran away from the
ball when it was hit to them. Almost
everyone refused to walk in with the bowler unless reminded every ball.
Most disappointing was the defeatist attitude that crept into the team
after the drinks break, with the exception of Brett, Jalay
and a couple of others. The team and I
spoke about this after the game so they know exactly what I mean. Until we as a team want to win and expect to
win, we will keep losing these close games.
We need to think about our commitment and put everything into our play
for our teammates. We should have won
this game.
I will be throwing a lot more responsibility back onto the players, for
field positions, encouraging each other and for keeping the intensity high.
