Comments:
In our sixth match we
played St Marys Leagues.
Brendan Ross was the captain for the day.
We won the toss and put St Marys in to bat. St Marys won the match on first innings. The game was played in a spirit of great
sportsmanship.
Our opening bowling was fast and damaging, with St Marys falling to 2-7
before recovering well. Brett South
(6-2-2-13) bowled fast and accurately, as did Jalay Bell (6-1-2-30) Jalay’s two wickets
came from two great return catches. Ethan
Willard (3-0-0-9) again performed well as an opening bowler and Jayden
Kostrubiec (4-2-0-3) was difficult to hit away. Ben Pagett (4-0-0-16) continued his
improved bowling, Brendan Ross (3-0-0-13) was his usual reliable self
and Owen De Silva (2-0-1-5) and Adam Gradidge (2-0-0-8) bowled
their best all year. Hasan Kemal
(2-0-1-19) picked up another wicket and the team was well supported by Michael
Lovegrove (2-0-0-9) and Cameron Findley (2-0-0-12). Our early
fielding was great and enthusiastic, with catches to Adam and Ethan
and a run out from a return throw from Hasan to Ben at
wiccie. St Marys
last wicket stand of 42 really took the game away from us and it was not helped
that our intensity in bowling and fielding fell right away after the drinks
break. Our sundries total of 63, in St
Marys total run score of 7-142 from 36 overs, was a reversal of our good work
the week before. St Marys hard hitting
down the leg side was a lesson for our team to follow.
Our batting, with few
exceptions, was possibly the worst we have done all year. Nine of our team were
bowled, after we all agreed that protecting our stumps was important and I
asked each batsman to the crease to play straight when the ball was on the
stumps. Worse, most of the wickets were
lost to cross-bat shots that were rash and unnecessary.
Ben Pagett (2 runs) and Brendan Ross (1 run)
opened. Cameron Findley came to
the wicket with out team at 4 for 7 from 8 overs and I asked him to stay in at
any cost, to stop any chance of a follow-on. Cameron did this admirably, only scoring 1
run but staying in for 50 minutes before falling to a great ball. Owen De Silva (5 runs) came in late
and hit the ball hard and Adam Gradidge (1 run) scored his first run for
the year. We were eventually all out for
38 from 24 overs, with only 11 runs off the bat.
To improve our results we really need to concentrate on our batting and
protecting our stumps, with too many of our players being bowled while playing
wild cross bat shots. We also need to
move our feet to get into position and hit leg side balls hard towards
the boundary. Our bowlers need to stick
to what they are good at, with no switching between pace and spin, over and
around the wicket bowling. We will be
introducing the concept of outswingers this week to improve bowling variation.
