Travel and Leisure

Austin: - Hey! There you are!
Guy: - Hi! Do I know you?
Austin: - No, but that's where you are, you're there! Viva Las Vegas!

I love to travel.  I really don't get to do it enough, but it is in my immediate plans to change that.  Here is where you will find the places I have visited and the places I plan to visit in the future.

Here are some places that I have visited:

San Francisco - I think that San Francisco is my favorite place so far.  The scenery is out of this world, the food is wonderful, the weather is cool, there is tons to do and see, there are street musicians EVERYWHERE....hey, this place even SMELLS good!  I love it!  Also, their public transportation system is awesome.  I have been here twice with my parents.

Monterey, CA - Beautiful.  They have what I think is the best aquarium in the US.  This can be a side trip if you go to SF.  If you look out over the water wearing polarized sunglasses, you can literally see different depths of water...very cool experience.  I also went wading in the tide pools.

Wine Country - Okay, so I don't drink wine.  Who cares!  The wine country is gorgeous.  It looks like a Hidden Valley Ranch commerial.  The people are really friendly and the food is good everywhere you go, probably because of all the wine snobs that demand it :)

Muir Woods Nat'l Monument - This is probably the most peaceful place I have ever been in my life.  My parents took us there the first time we visited San Francisco.  It reminded me of "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Grand Canyon - If you have ever doubted God's power, visit the Grand Canyon.  It is a humbling experience.  You feel so small compared to its vastness.  The enormity is untranslatable through photographs.  I hiked the Bright Angel trail from the rim to the river and back in one day...they advise you NOT to attempt this since you can, well, DIE.  It was so hard.  Part of the hike is over sand, which is just killer.  When I don't think that I can endure something, I often think back to this experience for reassurance.  I remember thinking I would NEVER do it again because it was so hard, but now I really want to, so if you know me and want to go, let's plan a trip!

Yellowstone Nat'l Park - For a girl who loves geology, this was like a candy store!  There are so many awesome things to see here.  Wildlife (DO NOT FEED THEM!!!), waterfalls, mud pits, geysers, jewel toned hot spring pools, caves, etc.  This place is enormous.  When I went,, they were recovering from some fires and there were new trees growing in some places and scorched earth in others.  I also saw the most beautiful double rainbow EVER when we drove into the park.  Oh yeah, and I had Mono when my parents took me there...thanks guys...

Mesa Verde - I have always thought that cliff dwellings and the like were cool.  This is a very neat place.  HOT at times, but neat.  There is a really good museum and  you can actually go into some of the places on the trail..  Had my first inkling of altitude sickness here...yeah, this is also the same trip with the Mono...

Arches Nat'l Park -  It really looks like the pictures, only bigger.

Petrified Forest Nat'l Park - An interesting place.  Don't be confused - this is not really a forest.  Think old, mineral deposited logs scattered around in a field.  There are also myths that if you take a piece of petrified wood with you, you will be cursed.  They have a whole wall dedicated to it...basically a ploy to keep people from Bogarting their stuff!

Mount Rushmore Nat'l Memorial -  Pretty cool.  Makes you think, because they blasted this sculpture with explosives.  Has a good museum.  Went there once when I was younger and once last summer.

San Antonio - I love San Antonio!  I have been there a few times with my family and, of course, TMEA is there, so between the two, I have been there many times.

Austin - Did I ever tell you how I broke my Girl Scout leader's nose?  Austin.  Did you know my family and I had our luggage stolen?  Austin.  Did you know that one time I told my parents I was spending the night in the dorms at UH with sorority sisters, but I was actually going with them to visit friends at UT?  Austin. (That's the only lie I have ever told them!)  Did I ever tell you that I actually LOVE AUSTIN?  I do.  It is a fun place to go.  If I ever leave Houston, I think it might be to live in Austin.

Dallas -  This is where my family is originally from and also where I went to college initially.  I visit Dallas at least two or three times a year.  I think Dallas is significantly different from Houston.

Disney World -  I had so much fun here on the "obligatory band trip" that every school seems to do.  I have to go back because I bought a pair of glass slipper earrings there and, lo and behold, LOST ONE!  Is that not the most hilarious thing ever?  Maybe one day Prince Charming will return it!

Boston - Boston is interesting.  I definitely like it better than yucky, boring Providence.  There is a lot of good Italian food and seafood there.  My dad made us walk the Freedom Trail.  We saw Paul Revere's grave and, coincidentally, were there on his b-day so there was a guy dressed in period clothing reinacting the midnight ride...I also saw the COOLEST South American ensemble performing at Quincy Market...I could have listened to them all day long.

Chicago - I was on a band trip here, so I didn't get to do much.  However, it was cool to visit here and I marched in about 4 different Fourth of July Parades here! (think I said "here" enough?)

Milwaukee -  I went to the Milwaukee Summerfest.  It was COLD because you are right there on Lake Michigan and the wind blows hard.  Also marched in a parade here.  Ate a bad brat...nearly puked.  Aside from that, the people I met in Wisconsin were so friendly to me!

New Orleans -  I have been here three times.  Once just for fun 'cause I had a free ticket and some friends wanted to go, once in the summer because I was CRAZY and thought that NO in July was a good idea..(bad)...and once for a band trip.  I do not like Bourbon street at night.  During the day, it is fun.  I think I just don't like people I don't know rubbing on me...eeewwww...I am REALLY into the food in New Orleans.  Shrimp Creole and Gumbo are the best ever!

Mexico -  Ya know...Mexico is sad.  However, I had a good time there and I would return (I AM returning next year for a wedding).  I just had a tough time dealing with the fact that children were running around begging for money like it was their job.  Other than that, there is a ton of stuff to do, the water is beautiful, there is tons of shopping and stuff is cheap.  If you go, stick to places that filter their water.  Even if you are just brushing your teeth!  I did not get sick there, but I know people who have!  Also, take sunscreen.  I burned SO FAST there, you would not believe it.

Las Vegas - WOW!  I got to go to Las Vegas for free because I was playing at the WAC basketball tournament that was hosted at UNLV my freshman year of college (When SMU had a really good year!).  This trip was the week before spring break.  Two weeks off of Calculus II was enough to convince me to drop the class and take it in summer school.  I had so much fun in Las Vegas, I just kinda forgot to memorize identities and such...I was only 19 when I went, so much of the debauchery was off-limits to me.  But there is so much else to do there other than gamble and drink...people should know that!  The hotel-casinos are the most visually stimulating places on earth.  There is always some statue coming to life or water spashing or a volcano erupting.  There are even roller coasters outside AND indoors.  One of my favorite things was buying the already-dealt packs of cards from the casinos.  They mark them so that you know they have been used.  Kinda dorky, I know, but I like them!  Oh yeah and there is FOOD FOOD FOOD and SHOPPING SHOPPING SHOPPING!  Unfortunately, our schedule was too "win-driven" to get tickets to any shows.  As soon as we stopped winning (about 5 and a half days in) we were at the airport within 30 minutes!

Foxwoods - Foxwoods is the world's largest casino.  It is in Connecticut.  You are driving along in the middle of nowhere and, all of a sudden, it just appears.  People have said it is like the Land of Oz...they are right!  There is tons of food (food is very important to me!) and there are table games, slots, etc.  There is a smoke free casino, which is nice, but it is small.  This place will make you stink!  I had to wash my jacket twice to get the smell out.  If you choose to gamble (that's a personal decision) I would recommend committing to a set amount that you think your fun is "worth."  For me, I was willing to pay $40 dollars to have some fun.  And that's exactly what I did.  I played nickel slots with $40 dollars and lost it all!  When I was done with the $40, I quit.  What a responsible girl I am :)  There are a ton of elderly people here.  They tote their oxygen tanks around...that part made me sad.

Here are some places I want to visit:

Ireland

China - Actually, I have a dream of adopting a baby from China someday...way...in...the....future...

Greece

Italy

Spain

Egypt

Australia

The Bahamas

Hawaii - mostly for the volcano aspect, but also for touristy reasons.

New York City - Can you believe that I currently live only 3 hours away and I have NEVER BEEN?  I almost drove there  once on a whim, but then there's that whole pesky problem of needing a place to park the car! **UPDATE**I am most likely going to take a trip to NYC next weekend!
