This takes place three years after Pokemon adventure book #3.
I had lost. I didn’t deserve my title as League Champion. I had lost to Lance. He was the last of the Elite Four I had to beat. I had already beaten the others. Lorelei had been easy; Pika (Pikachu) had shocked her Dewgong and Cloyster into submission. Bruno had been the hardest. If I hadn’t sent out Snorlax at the last minute to finish off his Hitmonlee, I would have been dead. He had already taken out Poliwrath, Gyrados, Aerodactyl, and Venusaur. I sent Pika off to Professor Oak’s to get help. I think she saw me get knocked off the cliff, but I’m not sure. Anyways, Snorlax had body slammed Hitmonlee, crushing it, so it couldn’t fight. I don’t know if it was luck, but I happened to land in a Pidgeot nest.
Anyhow, the Pidgeot had been peeved, but it hadn’t pecked me to death. It actually took care of me! I survived by eating smashed Weedles, which now, looking back on it, scares myself, but I was desperate. The Pidgeot took care of me, until my broken limbs healed. It even found my pokemon for me. I was so happy to see all of them- Snorlax, Aerodactyl, Gyrados, Poliwrath, and Venusaur.
I was on my way back to Pallet to get Pika when Agatha appeared to me and challenged me. So I fought her. I actually won, because of my experiences against the ghosts in Lavender town. However, that took several months. By the time I returned to Pallet, almost a year had passed.
I can’t describe the look on Professor Oak’s face when he saw me. He looked like he had seen a ghost. “DO YOU KNOW HOW WORRIED YOUR FRIENDS HAVE BEEN?!” He asked.
I blinked. “Professor. I sent Pika back here to get help. I’m sorry, but where is she?”
Professor Oak blinked. “What do you mean?” He asked. “I never saw your Pikachu.”
I stared in shock. “You mean… you didn’t get my note?”
“What note?” He sounded angry/annoyed.
“I sent Pika back with a note while I was battling Bruno! I told her to get help!” I said. What had happened to Pika?
“No, I did not get your note. Erika, Misty, Brock, and Blaine have all been worried sick about you!” He fumed.
“Oh no…” I said. “Can I borrow your phone?”
The professor assented, so I called Misty first. “Misty! Do you know where Pika is?”
“Hmm… Ash, is that you?! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!” Misty shrieked. I covered my ears.
“Yes, this is Ash! I’m sorry, but it was really hard to beat Bruno! Have you seen Pika?” I repeated.
“Krabby wants to say hi!” Misty said, cutting me off. Krabby waved.
“Yeah, that’s good and all, Misty, but have you seen Pika?” I asked.
“Oh yeah, I forgot. Professor Oak gave him to this trainer named Lawrence. You know, all of us wanted to go look for you, but only one of us could go, so we asked Pika to choose. And he chose this blonde kid with a Doduo!” Misty said.
I could only stare in shock. “Pika went with another trainer… willingly?”
“Uh-hum. Anyways, I’ll call you back.” Misty said, hanging up. I could only gape as the phone line disconnected.
“I guess I’ll call Blaine. Maybe he knows.” I said. Blaine was the smartest one of all, plus he had Mewtwo on his side, so if I could count on anyone, it would be him.
“Hello?” Blaine asked, picking up his rapidash-shaped phone. “Ash?!”
“Yeah, it’s me! Do you know where Pika is?” I asked.
“No, I don’t. Pika went with Lawrence. He said he was going to find you.” Blaine said. “Mewtwo says hi!”
I sweatdropped. “Blaine… Pika is missing, and I have no clue who this Lawrence kid is! What does he look like?”
“Well, he wears this huge straw hat, and he has blonde hair. He’s also got a Doduo, a Rattata, Misty’s Omastar, and Brock’s Graveler.” Blaine said.
“WHAT?!”
“Ash, chill.” Blaine said. “Come to Cinnabar first. I’ll install a locator in you pokédex. Pika is still your registered pokemon, right?”
“Yep.” I said. “All right.”
I hung up. “Professor? Can I have my pokédex back?”
Oak looked uncomfortable. “Er, Ash, I gave it to Lawrence…”
“YOU DID WHAT?!” I shrieked. “How could you?”
“Calm down.” Professor Oak said, but I was angry beyond compare. I ran to the computer and deposited Snorlax, before withdrawing Eevee and the Victreebell leader I had caught in the Safari Zone.
“Aerodactyl, go!” I shouted. Aerodactyl appeared. “Come on, we’re going to Cinnabar. Maybe Blaine can fix this mess.” I muttered. We took to the air.
A while later, we landed on Cinnabar Island. Aerodactyl and I flew over the volcano, before flying inside and landing inside Blaine’s lab.
“Blaine! Lawrence has my pokédex!” I shrieked.
Blaine stared. “What?!”
“Didn’t Professor Oak tell you?” I asked sarcastically.
“No! Why would he do that?” Blaine asked.
“I don’t know. But without my pokédex, how will I find Pikachu?”
Blaine narrowed his eyes thoughtfully. “Well, this might work.” He went into a closet and came back out with a black round disk.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“This is an advanced identification pokemon locator (AIPL).” Blaine said. “Usually, only researchers use them, but since you don’t have a pokédex anymore, you can have this.”
I took the disk and stared as it split open into a circle with six plates attached. It had lots of buttons on it. “Er, Blaine, how will this help?”
“This will identify all pokemon within fifty feet, including height, weight, HP, level, attacks, sex, and mood.” Blaine said.
“Okay.” I said. “Thanks Blaine!” I was about to leave when Blaine stopped me.
“One more thing. Mewtwo wants to go with you.” He said. Mewtwo floated out of the tank it had been sleeping in (complete with a Do not Disturb sign).
“But I can’t carry more than six pokemon without having problems.” I said. “Besides, Mewtwo is your pokemon. You created him!”
“Her, actually.” Blaine said. “But you were the one who captured her and taught me how to treat pokemon with humanity. Don’t worry. The AIPL also expands your carrying capacity to twelve, and includes transfer abilities.”
“I can’t thank you enough.” I said gratefully. I was about to leave when the AIPL uncurled and attached itself around my waist like a belt. Seven poke balls (including one master ball) attached themselves to the grooves in the side. Mewtwo smiled through the clear top of the poke ball at Eevee, who blushed.
“Aerodactyl, let’s go!” I shouted. Aerodactyl spread its wings and we were out of there. I waved goodbye to Blaine and Rapidash.
I returned to Oak’s lab and picked up four more pokemon, Nidoking, Snorlax, Sandshrew, and Fearow. That left two empty slots, one for Pika when I found her, and one extra.
For such a complicate device, the AIPL was easy to use. However, I disturbed several Pikachu colonies by accident. It had been two weeks and I still hadn’t found Pika.
“Sheesh.” I muttered. “You’d think it wouldn’t be so hard to find one little Pikachu.”
Just then, the AIPL rang. I pressed the monitor. “Yes? Who is it?” I asked.
A picture of a brown-haired man in a kimono appeared. “Sir Ash! Mistress Erika says Lawrence is in Celadon challenging her right now, and to call you!”
“Thank you!” I said. I called out Fearow. “Finally! Let’s go to Celadon!”
I landed silently in a grove of trees and watched while Erika battled a blonde kid’s Doduo with her Bellsprout. Bellsprout had already been subjected to several Peck attacks, and looked ready to faint, when Erika commanded it to use Mimic. I smiled inwardly. I remembered how it had mimicked Poliwrath’ Doubleslap attack. In an instant, the Doduo was the one being pecked. It only took a Mega Punch from Bellsprout to finish it off.
However, when the kid, who looked like Misty’s description of Lawrence, sent out Pika against Tangela, I got mad. Tangela had doused Pika with Poison Powder and Stun Spore already, but Lawrence was still forcing Pika to battle. I couldn’t contain my rage and stepped out of the shadows. A flick of my wrist and Nidoking was standing over Lawrence while I gathered Pika in my arms.
“Wha-what’s going on?” Lawrence asked. I didn’t say anything as I cuddled Pika. I had missed her so much…
However, when Pikachu shocked me, I screamed. “Pika! What are you doing?”
I could only stare in shock as Pika ran over to Lawrence and used a massive Thunder attack on Nidoking, forcing me to recall him.
What’s going on? Why was Pika attacking me? I thought we were friends… I could only scream in pain as I was subjected to her thunder attack…
Suddenly, the electricity stopped. I looked up to see Mewtwo protecting me with her Barrier attack. A flash of blue and Pika was disabled.
“Why?” I asked, as I stared at the immobilized pikachu. However, I didn’t have much time to ponder before Mewtwo was using Confusion on Omastar, Doduo, and Rattata.
“Eevee!” I shouted as Eevee appeared. He shot Thunder in the direction of Doduo and Omastar, followed by a Bubblebeam in Rattata’ direction. Lawrence stared at me in shock. I picked up Pika, recalled Eevee, and walked over to where Erika was.
“Who are you?” Lawrence asked. I glared at him.
“Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town.” I replied. “What did you do to Pika?”
“Nothing! We’re just friends!” he protested. I cut him off with a wave of my hand.
“Eevee, Thunder Wave.” I said. Eevee transformed into Jolteon and complied. “Now what did you do to Pika?”
He looked terrified. I sighed. This was getting us nowhere.
Erika spoke up. “From what I can tell, he’s convinced Pika that he is his real owner. And of course pokemon always obeys their owners. Remember, he has your pokédex too.”
I glowered at Lawrence. “HOW DARE YOU!”
He blinked.
“I’m Ash, you idiot!” I shouted.
He blinked again, before he looked angry. “So you’re Ash, huh? How could you send your pikachu away?”
“I saved her life!” I said. “Electric is weak against fighting! Besides, I sent her to get help, you thief!”
He didn’t look ashamed at all.
I sweatdropped. “Fine, then. Have it your way.” I picked up Pika and was about to leave the scene when I heard Erika shout a warning. I barely ducked a Rock Throw attack. I glared at the Graveler.
“Fine. I’ll have to do this the hard way. I challenge you!” I said to Lawrence. He scoffed.
“You think you can beat me?” he asked, laughing.
“Yep. You can even use Pika.” I said.
“Rattata, Doduo, Omastar, Graveler, Pika, go!” He smirked.
“Victreebell, Mewtwo, Aerodactyl, Poliwrath, Gyrados, Venusaur, Eevee, go!” I shouted.
“Hey, that’s unfair! Seven against Five!” He complained.
“Who gives? You stole my pokemon.” I said. I took to the air with Aerodactyl to avoid his pokemon, since none of them could fly.
“Doduo, Razor Wind them out of the air!” Lawrence said, figuring that if the trainer fainted, the pokemon would stop fighting.
“Hyper Beam.” I commanded. Aerodactyl Hyper Beamed Doduo, while Poliwrath used Seismic Toss on the Rattata to take it out.
“Rock Throw and Hydro Pump!” Lawrence commanded his pokemon.
“Venusaur, Vine Whip/Razor Leaf Combo!” I said, figuring that would do the trick. “Victreebell, Restrain Pika!”
Victreebell stuck Pika inside its bell while Venusaur attacked Omastar and Graveler.
Mewtwo acted on her own and disabled Lawrence, freezing him in midair.
I breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s it! I’m taking Pika and my pokédex back now.” I had Venusaur spray Lawrence with Stun Spore while I searched for my pokédex. I finally found it in the bottom of his knapsack.
“I hate you!” Lawrence shouted.
I shrugged. “I should be the one saying that. You stole Pika and my pokédex!”
Lawrence’s eyes opened and he started to glow, breaking free of Mewtwo’ disable attack. I found myself staring into the eyes of a Mew.
I gasped. Then, I turned around. “Fine! Keep Pika then, if you feel entitled to her.” I took off running before I could regret my actions.
Gary found me on a remote island. I had done nothing but train for two weeks.
“What do you want?” I asked miserably.
“Blue told me what happened. I wanted to see if I could help.” He replied.
“Help?” I thought back to all of those times Pika and I had worked together, including when I had beat Gary at the pokemon league finals. I started to cry, not caring that Gary was watching me.
I was surprised when Gary gave me a hug. I didn’t care though. I continued to cry into his shirt. “Why?” I asked.
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s because he’s Mew. Maybe it’s because Pika has been brainwashed. But you have to keep going.” Gary told me.
“How-how would you know?” I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me.
“I used to have a Tangela.” Gary said. “Remember when we fought Koga of Team Rocket in Lavender Town?”
“Yes.” I said. I remember Bulbasaur protecting me with her Solarbeam attack. I half-smiled at the memory.
“Tangela was killed by Arbok’ acid, just before Charmeleon and I were possessed.” Gary said. “I sort of lost my mind after that. That’s why it was so easy for Gastly to control me.”
I gasped. “Your Tangela?”
Gary sighed. “Yes. And that’s why I don’t want the same thing to happen to you.”
“Why would you care?” I asked bitterly, as I wiped the rest of my tears away.
“Because we’re friends.”
“Friends? I thought we were rivals?” I questioned.
“We are rivals. But deep down, we do care about each other. That’s why I left the Orange League to come and find you when you were gone.” Gary replied.
I blinked back more tears. Friends…
“I never knew you cared about me. After all, we hardly knew each other.” I managed to say.
“Yeah, but we all care about you. Me, Erika, Blaine, Misty, Brock, Bill, and even that annoying twit Blue.” Gary said.
We sat in silence for a while. Finally, I turned to look at him. “Gary?”
“Yeah?” he inquired
I held out my hand. “Friends forever?”
He took it. “Friends.” And we shook.
We continued to sit in silence after that, but this time, it was a companionable silence, not the earlier fear-and-anger filled gap.
Friends. I never expected that from Gary. I’ll get you back someday, Pika. But until then, have fun with Mew. And as for myself, I have to keep going. But at least this time I won’t be alone.
