Part One: Prophecy The High Priestess of Yue calmly approached the audience chamber, her normally impassive face set with determination as she passed the striking courtiers who looked upon her with looks of puzzlement upon their decorative faces. Inwardly, the priestess quivered from the task set before her, a task that would cause the only child she had ever cared for to be taken from her. Long golden brown twin braids framing her fine elven features and clear blue eyes resting below the delicate rune engraved circlet. Not many outside of the observatory knew the priestess by her face, but all recognized the symbol of her authority. The Priestess of Yue were to be obeyed and rarely questioned, their purposes shrouded in mystery and warning. If Yue commanded, everyone would obey lest disaster occur. Warnings from Yue were always true, and while terrible in their truth also guiding. Whispers followed in her wake like ripples from the passing of a boat. Ignoring everything, the priestess refused to be deterred from her self-assigned mission. Whispers were inconsequential; there were more important things beside the rumors of the court. Reaching the closed honey oak doors that were taller than five elves, the priestess raised her ornate crystal staff and struck the door with force. The noise echoed through the now eerily silent hallway as the courtiers stopped everything and watched the priestess. The only sound to be heard was the tinkling of the wind chimes, hung from each of the open windows that swung slightly in the early spring breeze that flowed through the elven palace. The doors opened slowly before the priestess to reveal the audience chamber, the large columns lining the way to the raised dais upon which sat the elven regent. The audience chamber was filled only marginally with the officers of the court of the elven kingdom, the courtiers finding it more interesting in the gardens and open-air hallways since it was a nice spring day. A steady murmur of many voices echoed in the vaulted ceiling, most of the rooms occupants not noticing the irregular entrance of a Priestess of Yue except for those in the immediate vicinity of the great doors. Priestess? came the surprised voice of the regents chamberlain. The chamberlain was an older man, simply known as S, with gray hair that stood on end and a nose that was tied on he was easily distinguished from those around him. Inclining her head slightly in acknowledgment of S, the priestess crystal blue gaze moved over the people that were still oblivious to her presence before settling upon the man who sat on the simple silver engraved chair at the end of the pathway she stood upon. I must speak with regent J. It is of great importance also that I speak with the heir. Now. Not the least bit intimidated by the cool way the priestess spoke, S bowed politely. A private meeting or a public? Private, the priestess coolly answered, her eyes left the regent and scanned the room for the slender heir. Where is the heir? He is somewhere with my student. S said unfazed. Then fetch them both. What will be discussed includes him as well. The priestess then turned on her heel and headed for the private audience chamber. Watching the ramrod straight back of the priestess, S remained in his spot until the priestess slammed the door of the smaller, private audience chamber closed behind her silver robes. The man also noted with interest that the noise in the room died with the reverberating boom that echoed through the room, attracting everyones attention. The regent royal, J, glared at the now closed door. This was not going to be fun. Who did that? Demanded J. Stepping forward, S bowed his head slightly in deference, hand holding his nose seemingly to keep it from falling off. The priestess of Yue demands a private audience with you, the heir and my heir. Lifting an eyebrow in surprise, J stared at his chamberlain, his mechanical arm scratching his chin absentmindedly. She wants what? A meeting. She did not tell me the purpose, only that she wanted to have an audience immediately. S waited patiently for the regents orders. Doing as the priestess said without Js permission could turn ugly. Scowling, J let S wait in silence for a minute before giving a command. Fetch the boy then. If the priestess feels she has something important to say then let her say it. I take my leave to fetch him then. S bowed deeply, the long, black robes of his office sweeping the granite floor as he rose and briskly left the hall in search of the heir. * The gardens were already in full bloom, the blossoms of the cherry and apple trees combined with the heady aroma of the rain laden spring wind filled the nostrils of two young elves who were sitting on the flagstone path that ran through the orchards. It was a beautiful spring day and the youths were doing their studying in the orchard rather than in the dusty library they frequented during the winter months. One of the youths was small, toned and compact with deep dark blue eyes and short, messy, chocolate hair. The other one was taller and more slender and also had brown hair, but was a great deal lighter than his small companions. The taller ones hair was styled unusually, the long bangs combed so that they hid one emerald colored eye. In their hands, both youths held identical, thick, red leather books and looked up only occasionally to make comments to each other about the contents of the books. Pieces of paper were scattered around them along with a couple of rolled maps, writing utensils and books. General Yuy used the pincer strategy at the mouth of the tunnel entrance, but I think it would have worked better if he had made a shield wall, said the smaller of the two as he wrote something on a piece of paper laying on a stone beside him. Flicking a flower petal off his neatly written notes with a flick of his pen, the boy glanced over at his friend waiting for agreement or disagreement. No. With the pincer attack he was able to destroy more. He did loose men that way but it by using it he damaged the Twitsues more, the taller one said in disagreement as he picked up a slender green book. Though I do think that he made a mistake in the first place for choosing the tunnels as the battle ground in the first place. There isnt enough space and there is the possibility that the roof could have been collapsed by a few well placed spells. Opening the green book, the boy brushed his bangs out of his eyes and chewed on the end of his pen. Rapid footfalls interrupted the boys conversation as S approached, his black robes standing out against the bright colors of the apple and cherry blossoms. Standing above the two sitting boys, S looked down his false nose impatiently at the two he had been looking for. You are to come with me. NOW. Blinking at his master, the taller of the two, named Trowa silently closed his book as he nodded in assent. The other boy, named Heero did the same while sending one of his infamous glares at S. I dont know whats going on so dont glare at me like that, S snapped as he tapped his foot in impatience. Js been in a rotten mood all morning and current matters are not helping at all. Get moving. Grabbing their books and scattered papers hurriedly, the boys followed S as he spun on his heel and marched off, giving the two no time to question S about what was going on. * Sally tapped one slippered foot impatiently against a leg of the heavy oak conference table as she waited for the boys to come. J sat at the other end, his fingers pressed together in a triangle as he regarded her over them. J showed no signs of impatience; the only sign that he was curious of what Sally wanted being the fact that he was present. Sally felt like strangling the bastard. J would be control of the elven court until Heero married, which could mean forever since Heero wasnt the most open person Sally knew. Minutes passed by as the High Priestess of Yue and the Regent Royal had a staring contest over the conference table. Finally, a side door opened and S ushered the young Heir into the room. It had been a few years since Sally had seen the boy and she was internally surprised at the changes that had occurred in the boy. The boy before her looked physically the same as the young elven heir that had spent many hours stargazing with her as a young child, but the way Heero held himself and the look in his eyes was almost completely different. There was a rigidity there that hadnt been there several years ago. Now worried, Sally wondered what had J done to change the Heir so much. Standing, Sally paid Heero an honor she refused to give to J. She bowed deeply, and gave the formal greeting for a meeting between the elven ruler and the High Priestess of Yue. Your majesty, I hope you find the moonlight guiding your dreams. Yue has always guided me, Priestess. Heero returned formally, his eyes softening a bit with curiosity. What is it that you wished to see me about Sally? I suggest we all have a seat then. I have much to tell you. Sally said to Heero, not giving any attention to J who was trying to find an opening to speak. Nodding, Heero took a seat midway between J and Sally. Trowa sat between Heero and J while S took a seat across from him. Sally again was surprised by the seating arrangement. Trowa was putting himself between Heero and J, was there a reason for this? Or was she reading too much into it? We are all here, say what you want to Priestess, J said with a slimy smile as he watched Sallys every move. Fighting the urge to beat J senseless with her staff, Sally began to speak. For several months now several of the most highly respected prophets in the sect have been having recurring snatches of what seems to be the same dream. Not one of them was able to stay in the required trance long enough to gain control of what we believed to be a prophecy. So you failed to piece together a weird dream? J asked sardonically, not knowing where this was going and getting bored. Sally just glared at him before continuing. So I myself went through the purification to try and directly connect my soul to Yue. After I had purified myself in the springs, I cast the spells of isolation and went into the deep trance that only a High Priestess is capable of. I reached Yues consciousness then. You actually touched Yue? Heero questioned quietly as J glared at him to shut up, his mechanical glasses making whirring noises. Yes. I was told many things, many of which are very important right now. Many also were about you Heero. Me? The Heir seemed startled. What does he have to do with any prophecy? We are not at war or in some other danger. There is no need for prophecies now. J snapped at Sally. Heero must leave here with Trowa for awhile. I must give them their instructions in private however. Sally sent her best glare at J. Im the regent and Ill decide. J snarled, standing up and glaring right back at Sally. Not if I use my authority to have you removed. Sally shot back, voice filled with venom. Heero and Trowa both squirmed in their seats as Sally and J glowered at each other. S just looked back and forth between the two angry faces, wondering which one would win in a fistfight. J may have made mechanical enhancements to replace what he had lost to age, but Sally had that staff and looked like she was ready to spit nails. Snarling his disapproval, J gave Heero a pointed look, grabbed S by his prosthetic nose and stalked out of the room with a loud slam of the door. A second later he opened the door back up and slammed it again for good measure. Heero and Trowa looked at each other and then at Sally who was trying to start the door on fire with the heat of her glare. Ano Sally? Heero tried to break through the cloud of anger and rage. Closing her eyes and taking a calming breath, Sally sank into her chair. Its alright Heero. I just didnt want him to know what Im going to tell you. Youre leaving as soon as I tell you. Leaving? Trowa queried, his one visible eye unreadable. Yes leaving. Heero, have you ever found anyone you felt you would marry? Sally asked, her eyes softer than when she had been growling at J. Iie. Heero answered, eyes becoming cold again. Well, I guess that is to be expected with the type of foretelling I saw. Crossing her arms, Sally stood up and began to pace while chanting a charm to seal the room against eavesdroppers. Heero, you and Trowa are going to be going away for awhile. I dont know where your exact destination will be but it is very important that you follow what I tell you. You both will head south through the mountains that separate us from the rest of the continent. You will be captured after passing through the mountains, but you must accept this. Your capture will take you to him. Him? Heeros whole body tensed. Him. Sally affirmed. From what I can tell he will be wealthy, probably a powerful noble, and you will know he is your mate when you meet him. You will need to explain our traditions to him and bond with him. Heero only nodded slowly. Something bad is going to happen soon Heero I dont know what but you bonding with him is very important. Trowa is being sent for his mate as well. Sally felt really bad doing this to them. What she had seen hadnt been all that reassuring, but Yue had made it very clear that Heero had to go. I have the supplies you will need for the journey across the mountains ready for you in the Sanctuary. You need to leave immediately before J tries to detain you. Trowa shifted in his seat, a look of indifference upon his face. Priestess, is there anything else you can tell us? No. Ive been warned against saying anything more because it might cause difficulties later on. Fine. If that is all you have to say, then Trowa and I should be leaving. Heero stood up after speaking and went to the sealed side door that glowed with a faint silver sheen. Trowa followed him more calmly. Be careful. I want to see my pledge son again. Sally called gently after the boys as she disabled the seal. With a final look back at Sally, Heero nodded before stepping out the door and going down the side hallway to the Sanctuary, Trowa a silent shadow behind the young prince. Yue guide you Heero, Sally whispered her prayer to Yue. Tbc after winter break [email protected] Note on elven inheritance: By elven tradition, Heero must be married before he can take the kingship. So, since the kingdom cannot be without a ruler of sorts, J is the acting regent. In the next chapter Ill explain what Sallys talking about when she sends Heero and Trowa off. |
