~~~~~ Announcer ~~~~~
'Welcome to Dateline, and now with us is Stone Phillips...'
~~~~~ Stone Phillips ~~~~~
'Figure skating, one of the sport's most artistic and controversial events. From the face-off between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding; to the judging of the Russian and Canadian pairs skaters; figure skating has come to be known not only for the balance between athleticism and artistry, but for the controversies that the participants find themselves to be in.
'We take you to the figure skater Michelle Ho: Since the age of five she skated into the hearts of those who knew her with her ambition, patience and passion. Her parents, immigrants from the war-torn Vietnam, entertained their elder daughter's love for a sport with so little chance for success while infusing the notion of the need of an education.'
~~~~~ Michelle's Voice ~~~~~
"My parents were supportive of my desire to be on the ice. But deep inside, I had this feeling that this wasn't what they had wanted for their daughter. This feeling propelled me, pushed me to prove that I could succeed if I put my heart, my inner passion into what I love, then perhaps I could win them over..."
'In the meantime, not that far from the small town of Hinsdale was a young boy only a full year older than her living in Rolling Meadows. Though he excelled in many sports it would be figure skating that he would soon triumph. His determination, talent and love for figure skating would be the driving force that would move him in the world of figure skating and everything else in his life.'
~~~~~ Timothy's Voice ~~~~~
"Figure skating wasn't something that a normal male would do in junior high school. However it was the one sport that gave me a constant rush and a feeling of flight that nothing else seemed right. When I was still training and learning in Illinois, Michelle was my training partner and friend at the time. She and I helped one another find and conquer one another's weaknesses and strengthen them."
~~~~~ Stone Phillips ~~~~~
'This was a friendship that helped Timothy continue skating even with the scrutiny from his male classmates. While other young boys of his age learn soccer, football, and basketball, Timothy continued training on the ice with the support of his family and close friend. However this was a friendship that severed when the two were separated due to the need to excel in the sport: under different coaches...'
'In tonight's special two hour edition of Dateline, we will follow these two phenomenal skaters from their starts in suburban Illinois and into the lives of Americans across the country. Watch how these two ambitious skaters lost and found one another and watch their lives intertwine.'
