DEATH CAME SUDDENLY
_______
John Hartman Expired While
Eating Dinner at Noon.
_______
He was ill less than two weeks
_______
While seated at a table in a bedroom, he fell from the chair to the floor.
Members of his family raised him to his bed..one gasp and life was extinct. After an illness of less than two weeks from neuralgia of the heart, John Hartman, one of Columbia's best known citizens, died suddenly at his home, No 418 Locust Street, at noon today.
On Sunday, July 21st, Mr. Hartman was taken ill and a physician was summoned. At that time, however, no serious results were anticipated. In a few days he was able to be about the house. At various times he suffered intensely. Only on Thursday he was walking about the house and told the members of his family that he felt much better. This morning he remained in bed and at noon his dinner was carried to him. Mr. Hartman arose from his bed and took a seat beside a small table where the meal was spread for him. The other members of the family were down stairs in the dining room when they were startled by a heavy object falling upon the floor above. Mrs. Hartman and son Charles ran to the second story, where they found Mr. Hartman lying on the floor, having fallen from his chair. Albert, another son just arrived at the house and he hurried for a physician. Mr Hartman was raised from the floor and placed on his bed, when he gave one gasp and life was extinct.
The deceased was born in York sixty-six years ago. He came to Columbia about forty-nine years ago and a few years after married to Miss Elizabeth Heller, of this place. Four sons were born unto them. He is survived by the entire family, and four sisters who reside in York and one brother in Philadelphia. The sons are William F, John H., and Charles who are painters and Albert, hatter and furnisher.
The deceased was a stockholder of the Columbia National Bank and one of the largest real estate owners in Columbia. He did much for the growth of the town in the matter of building, having erected almost three hundred houses always selecting the outskirts of the town for his houses. The houses were sold, but at the time of death, Mr. Hartman owned about thirty houses that he rented. An announcement of the funeral will be given later.
