LABOR DAY WEEKEND AND THE COMMODORE’S CUP REGATTA

By Dan Muss

The weekend started off with a slow-moving line of thundershowers that rolled through about 11 AM. The weather radar map, however, showed no activity after the front so the PROs for this regatta, the two commodores from the Deerhaven and the Turkey Neck Yacht Clubs, postponed for a while and then wisely sent the racers to lunch with a start at 1 PM and two races to be sailed back-to-back. It was a cool and cloudy day but they got two races off without incident. In our one race my crew, Fearless Marilyn Filemyr, and I got a great start and led for a while but lost the lead on the first weather leg to finish second while Kemp won handily.

Both Sunday and Monday, however, were “Chamber of Commerce” days with sunshine, temperatures in the high 70s and nice wind for racing.

On Sunday we had, again, a good start but Peters took us on the first beat. On the second beat we had closed the gap so that we crossed Peters on port as he was approaching the windward mark. It was very close but we were enough ahead so that I could bear off and pull my stern around as he held his starboard tack course. We then over-stood the mark by another few boat-lengths because the wind was so shifty and were able get around while Peters had to pinch up and lose speed.

On Monday we again took the start only to have Peters take us on the first beat to windward. At the last downwind leg Muss, Peters, Rissell and Miller were all close together but masterful spinnaker handling by Fearless Filemyr took us first around the leeward mark to win the race and the regatta.

In the Challenger Fleet Schubert dominated the racing as he skillfully tacked to find the wind along the shoreline on every beat. So it was Tuel and Holloway battling for second place. During the second race on Sunday Holloway’s main sail suddenly dropped as they attempted to adjust it upwind. Holloway, always prepared, had an extra wrench in his pocket. He was able to raise the main again and keep second place.

There is one more race next Saturday but it is too long for my old bones so this is my last column for this season; I’ll be back next spring!
