OLD ENGINE: In response to the question, "What kind of engine is in it?" Jay wrote: "Of all things it HAD for an engine a Walthrup B&W marinized Triumphh 1200cc (i'm guessing) car engine, four cyl, OHV, with which it dug huge holes in the water for itself. Not being a purist, and cringing at all that frozen and rusted metal, I gave it away. We go electric, 36v minnkota".
NEW ENGINE: That's right, Jay has installed a 36 volt electic motor to power this Pearson Packet. Here is what he wrote about it:
Hi Ron, sails come in soon, but here's a photo afloat. I've yet to come up with a name. My electric power (36 volts via 6 12volt batteries off-the-shelf at Walmart, a MinKota 101lb thrust trolling motor mounted to the rudder) allows me to reach hull speed at 15 amp hours, and batteries (400 lbs)give me a 7 hour range. Coming down to 4 knots I'm good for 8-10 hours.
Wind and wave slow me down, but haven't gone backward--yet. Nice coverage of hullspeed formulae, Chris. Many thanks. My next project will be to electrify a 20'lwl Maxwell cutter, and this time go with just 12 or 24 volts and a pair of MinK's, perhaps 60lb. At $550 for the 101, $250 for the threebank charger, $200 for the Emeter, $360 for batteries, I think I can do better with more offtheWallMartshelf stuff. E.G. their single bank MinK smart charger is $58. oh well it's only money....
Amps- Speed Data for 16'waterline
Finally got a working GPS, the Link 10, paper and pencil together at one time on my Pearson Packet. The following data pertains to 101 lb thrust minkota wired for 36 volts.
AMPS > MPH
4.5 > 2.6
7.0 > 3.3
10.0 > 3.6
15.0 > 4.0
20.0 > 4.4
25.o > 4.6
30.0 > 5.0
I have some unfaired territory underwater; hull speed in knots is often figured at 1.2 times the square root of the waterline length in feet, for what that's worth.
