Student Alliance for Imam Jamil (SAIJ)

Who are We?

SAIJ was established in November 2000 by a host of student leaders from all over the US, who had gathered in Atlanta specifically for this purpose. The primary goal of the alliance is to bring forth the truth about the personality and character of Imam Jamil and to mobilize support for a free and fair trial.

Who is Imam Jamil?

In the late 1960’s, he was known as H. Rap Brown, Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Minister of Justice of the Black Panther Party, and on the FBI’s most-wanted list. Today, he is Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, a devoted Muslim dedicated to the principles of the Holy Qur’an and the tradition of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the Imam (spiritual leader) of an international Muslim community centered in Atlanta, Georgia.

In the clutches of an Unforgiving System

Imam Jamil Al-Amin, formerly H. Rap Brown, was a prominent leader of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and 70s. The establishment called that movement National Democratic Revolution. In reality, it was war. H. Rap Brown was a hero of that war, when he and others helped the oppressed of the society to gain considerable rights. Unfortunately, for some that war has not ended and this same hero (Brown, now Imam Jamil) is now a victim of that ongoing war.

He accepted Islam in 1971. In 1976, he came to Atlanta, GA and was instrumental in bringing Islam to the West End thereby ridding that area of drugs, prostitution and other vices and establishing a strong Muslim community there. This same brother, whose services to Islam and humanity are well noted, has been wrongfully accused of murdering one police deputy and wounding another. He has been incarcerated in prison since the time those shootings took place (March 2000). His trial is yet to begin!
