When Shrina was going to build a reactor at Corel, Barret convinced Dyne it was a good idea. While Dyne and Barret were out on duty, the reactor blew up and the towns people were to blame. For their punishment, the town was burned down. Dyne and Barret were on their way home when Scarlet ordered Shrina troops to fire at them. The excitement caused Dyne to fall off a cliff to where Barret was just able to grab a hold of his left hand with his right. Since the Shrina troops were missing repeatedly, Scarlet grabbed a gun and hit both their hands in one shot, bringing Dyne to fall down the cliff. When Barret returned to Corel, both their wives were dead, but Marlene, Dyne's one year old daughter, was still alive. Barret decided to raise her as his own in thought that Dyne was surely dead. After this, they both unknowingly had the same  operation of a gun grafted into their arms. When Dyne had discovered what happened to his town and his family, he was outraged and went on a killing-spree. He was then sent to Corel Prison. Since he was the first sent there, he named himself the leader of all the prisoners. Later on, an incident happened to where Dyne had killed many more people at Gold Saucer to get Barret convicted and sent down as well. When Barret found out it was Dyne with the gun-arm, and that he was still alive, Dyne fought him forcefully. After a defeat by Barret, Dyne tells Barret to never make Marlene cry and throws himself off a cliff.
