History
The West Georgia Camerata Club, established in 1969, was a club comprising of thirteen women who were music majors and minors. This club was established primarily as an organizing force in seeking membership in Sigma Alpha Iota. In October 1969, Ms. Betty Tolbert Smith, one of the sponsors of the Camerata Club, contacted Mrs. Dorothy Whinery, National Secretary of SAI, to inform her of the interest in starting a chapter of SAI at West Georgia. After receiving general information and brochures concerning the fraternity and the petitioning procedures, Comerata Club matured and increased in numbers.
In the Winter of 1972, the members voted to change the name of the Camerata Club to Delta Mu. During the spring quarter of 1972, the first rush was held, jerseys were ordered, and resolute plans were made to petition for membership in Sigma Alpha Iota.
By 1979, through a lot of hard work and dedication, the dream of both the Camerata Club and Delta Mu became a reality. On April 27, 1980, Delta Mu was initiated as the Eta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, with a membership of 30 plus 4 Patroness Members. A debt of gratitude is owed to Mrs. Betty Smith and Mrs. Pat Stone, Province Officer during our chartering, for all their effort and devotion to SAI.
