ABOUT US

Based in Albany, Oregon, South Albany High School’s Robotics Team has started up again this year (2007) after a three-year hiatus. We are a rookie team, composed of twenty students aged 14-18, but we have some experience on our side, too:
- Chava Neuhaus, South Albany High School's Electronics and Woodshop instructor, is our Team Leader.
- Steve Merrill, a long-time employee of Hewlett-Packard, is our Team Co-Leader and our programming mentor.
- Ron Propp, a former Team Leader of many years, is our fabrication/assembly mentor.
The upcoming build season kicks off in early January 2008, when the Foundation for the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) officially issues the challenge to high schools nationwide. FIRST Robotics is a national organization which was founded to help teach young adults how to operate and build robots in a team environment while learning from each other socratically. When we have accepted the challenge, we will then receive our standard kit of parts and the rules of the competition (to keep things interesting, the rules change annually). After that, we will have a six-week timeframe in which to brainstorm and fabricate/assemble our robot, a process which will include designing and building mechanical manipulator systems and developing and controlling electronic and software systems.
When this season's robot is complete, we will participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), a nationally organized contest developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Our first contest will be in late February 2008, at the Pacific Northwest Regionals in Portland, Oregon.
