Learning Disabilities and a 504 Plan
Your child may qualify for a 504 Plan, if she or he has any of the learning problems: has difficulty writing from the board, following oral directions, fails timed tests but knows the information, has eye fatigue, has unexplained headaches, tends to do better in the morning than the afternoon, went through remediation in reading and still has problems, has spelling difficulties, omits small words when reading, has difficulty writing on paper and/or is failing but can't qualify for special education, then there may be an undiagnosed hidden disability. I am an experienced mother and an experienced public education teacher with more than 25 years of experience. Presently,I am a reading specialist. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way on how to obtain and implement a 504 Plan.  Unless you know what you are doing, you can easily get discouraged. After all, knowledge is power and you are going to have to go after it. It won't be handed to you on a silver platter for the taking...I can share my experience with you and how you can become your child's advocate...My oldest child has CAPD (central auditory processing disorder). This disorder can easily misinterpreted as being ADD. My middle child has moderate cerebral palsy.  He is not wheel-chaired bound and doesn't use any devices to assist in walking. At first, he was diagnosed with ADD/Autism. In fact,he was misdiagnosed four times, until the age of 11. My youngest child has juvenile glaucoma with migraines and photophobia.  At first, she was diagnosed as being a slow-learner. Then, she was diagnosed as having dyslexia. I was very fortunate to intervene on her behalf. It was determined that she has glaucoma by the age of ten, after five consecutive visits with her ophthalmologist.
Today, my children are doing quite well with the accommodations that have been firmly established for each one of them.
Presently, I have a listening ear to anyone who needs some advice. Just e-mail and if I can offer you free advice, I will.
