Film on Communal violence - "Tamas"- Exhibition in T.V. - Message.

The attempt of the author of the film is to draw a lesson from our country's past history, expose the motives of person who operate behind the scenes to generate conflicts and to emphasis the desire of persons to live in amity and the need for them to rise above religious barriers and treat one another with kindness, sympathy and affection. It is possible only a motion picture to convey such a message in depth and if it is able to do this, it will be an achievement of great social value. [ Ramesh Chotalal Dalal vs Union of India. AIR 1988 SC 775 = 1989 Supp (2) SCC 511. Sabyasachi Mukherji and S.Ranaganathan {JJ}]

Film against ban on reservation -Freedom of expression - Art. 19(2)-Constitution

A tamil film was produced against the reservation policy. Madras High Court has revoked the certificate granted to the film ( AIR 1989 Mad 149). Supreme Court reversed the judgment. Freedom of expression which is legitimate and constitutionally protected cannot be held to ransom by an intolerant group of people. Open criticism of Government policies and operations is not ground for restricting expression. Intolerance is as much dangerous to democracy as to the person himself.
