Dr. R. M.Sahai
A Visionary – missionary with the mission for better vision - is how best we can describe Dr. Ram Mohan Sahai. Born in 1937 in a school head master’s family in Datia, MP, he imbibed the lessons of patriotism and service before self quite early in life. Self financing his studies by running a second hand bookshop, he breezed his way through school and medical education in India and stepped on English shores in pursuit of best possible training in his chosen vocation - Ophthalmology. Gathering the best possible pearls for his country, he brought it back to his people and offered his services through Sahai Hospital in Jaipur. Under his able guidance, this hospital flowered to become one of the premier institutes for ophthalmic care & training not only in Rajasthan but in North India as well. Through this 100 bedded hospital and also by directly reaching out to the rural masses, Dr. Sahai has operated and helped restore vision to more than 1.5 lac patients in the last 40 years. He has provided ophthalmic care services to over 18 lac patients through more than 3000 eye camps. These camps were conducted totally free of charge irrespective of caste, creed, colour sex or socio-economic status, mainly benefiting the under privileged people living below the poverty line.
After completing his MBBS, DOMS, & MS in GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, Dr Sahai was conferred with DO by the Royal College of Surgeons & Physicians, London and is also a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and the coveted American College of Surgeons. He is a member of innumerous international and national organisations and has authored several books and has a large number of research publications to his credit.
It is towards making his dream of the "Right to Sight" a reality, that he has been
conducting a free eye OPD in
his hospital for the last 28 years. This alone caters to an average of 40,000 - 50,000 patients per year. The income generated from the paid services of the hospital is channelised to self finance the charitable activities in schools & society through the Eye
Research Centre Society, This charitable body in the last one year alone conducted free School Health Check up & awareness camps including medicine, spectacle distribution covering more than 24,000 underprivileged children & also a large number of free eye camps in which 5985 patient benefited from free cataract operations. This body also helps in initialing & promoting community surveys, training and manpower development in ophthalmology and research in eye care. The results of this research work have been presented not only in national but international conferences as well and have put Jaipur on the world map of standard eye care centres.
Recognizing the high standards set by Dr.Sahai, the Medical Council of India has approved of this hospital’s training programmes and this is the only hospital in Rajasthan to be accredited by the National Board of Examination for post graduation (DNB) Ophthalmology
Through his constant endeavor & efforts in manpower development, he pioneered the paramedical training course for Ophthalmic Assistants and has also introduced various fellowships & specialty training courses which are much sought after by doctors & paramedical from all over India.
His zeal to heal has helped provided solace not only to the visually handicapped & weaker sections but also to the disabled & aged segment of our society. In his capacity as the President Indian Council of Social Welfare, he has helped in setting up a home for aged &, day care centre for the aged and a vocational training centre for the disabled in Jaipur & has helped generate funds from International Agencies as well for these project.
Dr. Sahai is also a Founder trustee and Hon Secretary of Jaipur Calgary Eye Hospital, the Vice President of Eye Research Centre Society, the President Elect-Rajasthan Ophthalmological Society, Vice-President-Federation of Ophthalmic Research Centres of Education, Avoidable Blindness Counsellor for Rotary District 3050 as well as providing his services to more than a dozen social and medical organisations.
He is the recipient of various awards including Than Chand Mehta Gold Medal for Community Service in1977, Biswas Eye Foundation Medal for Community Service, Lions Clubs Jaipur Medal of Honour in 1989, Rotary Award for Community Service in 1983, Snehal Vanita Sangh Silver Shield in 1997. He was recently (in 2002) awarded the prestigious "Raja Dulha Rai Award" by His Highness Maharaja Bhawani Singh for his outstanding contribution to the field of Ophthalmology & social service.
