THE DAWN by Sandra Osborne
CONDITIONS APPLY

My best friend is like a lighthouse
Tall, strong, upright
Shining like the North Star
Far into the night.

He ignites my soul
Just by being straight and steady
Fuels my hopes and dreams
Although I am not quite ready.

Silent as the rock on which he stands
He shares his light with saints and brigands.
Make no mistake
He weathers well
Through tirades and storms
And emotional swells.

Like a moth I am drawn
To this eternal flame
On a wing and a prayer
In a suicidal game.

The flesh falls from the bones
In the searing heat
Near death I experience
Joy and defeat.
A stone cold exterior
And a heart of fire.
I burn
As if I have been touched by a real live wire.

Up close and personal
It’s easy to see
Conditions apply
And I can’t be me.

The way to the shore
Is a rocky road
Survivors are reduced
To a loathsome toad

Romancing the stone
Is a challenge to life and limb
If you are not equipped
Your chances are slim.

Inscrutable rock
Inflexible stone
Self-contained
Inhospitable
To flesh and bone.

Unrelentingly unforgiving
Distinctly aloof
When the north wind blows cold
You don’t need proof.

Yet my best friend
Thru rain and storm
The conditions are cruel
But his heart his warm.

The steadfast soul
The beacon so bright
Fills my horizon
Night after night.

Independent, original
So solitude is easily understood
The natural magnetic powers
To the great humanitarian good.

A deep student of nature
Generally loved and adored
Thunder and lightning excite him
Flattery makes him bored.

A passion barely concealed
That could burn and erupt
When the heart is the weakest organ
In a life pure and uncorrupt.

Thus to my far away friend
With every toss of the wave
I may sink or swim closer
To the presence I crave.

Don’t change with the monsoon
As the seasons roll by
Be there standing tall
Until the day I die.

A monument of inspiration
Through life’s stormy weather
My world would be amiss with you
In this life or another!
