A SHORT PRAYER
By

They say practice makes perfect
And that love has an extraordinary psychological effect
I am a believer now and down on my knees
Could we try, Mother dear, one more time, please!
How can I touch his Mother’s feet
When I never learned how to bend?
How can I be humble and sweet
When that has not been my past trend?
The love I have is something rare and perfect
So for love’s sake help me to be picture perfect!
How do I walk, talk and dress, so that he loves me
How do I express my love, so that he knows its only he
That I love both by night and by day
Teach me, Mother dear, guide me, I pray.
Teach me anew, how to whisper his name
Show me that true love, isn’t just a crying game.
How do I hold him, how do I feel
When he is not like to concede, less likely to kneel.
Show me, Mother dear, in my world of mindless dreams
How to block out the bad, get rid of the screams.
And, if I am dispirited or quite forlorn
Give me the courage to live life on my own.
If wishes were pennies, I would be a millionaire
Coach me instead to invest in faith and prayer.
Teach me mother dear, not to sin and despair
Hold my hand gently. Help me prepare.
‘Faith can move mountains, if this is true
Then his love shall be mine. I have faith in you.
