When Bad Things Happen
By Raven

After all that had happened in the previous weeks, Allison decided to take a break from life that night. She had come home early; it was Friday, and she wanted to relax. She ate a small dinner and changed her clothes. Tonight, she was going out on the town. No one was going to ruin her fun.
She headed to one of the places that she was a regular at, a seedy little place in one of the poorer sections of DuQuesne City, called Eightball & Aces; a small hole in the wall with the reputation of being a tough joint. Allison loved it, and after a few weeks, she was more or less left alone by the regulars.
She arrived a little after seven- it was June, and the sun was still up. He didnt show up until a little after nine that night. Allison had never seen this man before. He had on a dirty t-shirt and a ball cap that said Mercury Trucking., which meant he was a local that ran freight all around the island. He smiled at her in a friendly manner, but he seemed a little shy. He was a tall, strong man with hands that were still a little dirty. Most likely she thought from servicing his engine in some way. She smiled back at him.

He was finishing helping the mechanic get his new fuel regulator in place when he felt her. He knew she was close, only a block or so away. This was the strongest screamer he had ever felt, next to his mother. It took nearly two hours to finish fixing his truck. By then, he could feel the fire of his need for the fear. He walked into the bar and sat down, leaving a few stools between himself and her. He did the shy act- he had seen his friend do before. She smiled at him. Shes hooked. he thought. It always works. He sat there and started to remember.

Once again, he could hear his mothers voice. Robert Joseph, why cant you be like you brothers? Why didnt you hier me when I called you? She would always say that to him. You are always late.
Im sorry, mama. No matter how much he apologized, she always hit him. The more he said, the madder she got. By age eight, all he could do is stand there and take the beatings. Mama was a screamer, and a strong one. His brothers were screamers too. He had always been small as a child and had been real sick when he was little. Mama had always said that daddy had left when he was little because he had been so sick all the time. When he had been real little he could remember his mother trying to get him to spiek.
Dont move you lips, Robert. she would say. Just spiek what you are thinking.
How, Mama? he would ask.

Like this. she would say, but he never could hier a word. Then she would call on Thomas or David. They would come running up and stand there. He always knew when they were thinking at one another. By his tenth birthday, they wouldnt even talk to him anymore. The only time she ever did was to yell at him for his bad grades, or to tell him to do some chore. Most of the time it was to do something David or Thomas were supposed to have already done.
His primary manifestation didnt hit until he was nearly seventeen. In one summer, he grew fifteen inches and put on a hundred and eighty pounds of muscle. He had finally  grown up, but his mother still wasnt happy. Why cant you learn to hier me? she would say.

I couldnt hier her until the time she tried to hit me again. When she grabbed me, I did hier her. Worthless little bastard! I knew I should have aborted you when I found out about you! I hate you, you ungrateful ugly little wretch!
If you hate me so much, Mother, why didnt you let me live with Dad?
Let him think he was better then me. I wasnt born rich like he was. I earned every penny I have. I work every day to get where I am!
You keep me here to get revenge, dont you?
You think that because your last name is Kennedy that it entitles you to a silver spoon! That was when she realized I had a hold of her. Let go of me, you little bastard!
Why, Mama, I can hier you now.

Robert, you are hurting me! Let go! I hit her once across the mouth. She screamed in my head, but it didnt hurt. That was when the fear first caught her.
Why cant I hear the collective?
Because I dont want you to, Mama. I want you to feel the loneliness I did. She started to panic once again. I could taste her fear- it was the most intoxicating thing I had ever felt. I hit her again and again.
We are going for a little ride, Mama. I took her to the dock, to her brand new boat. I ripped out the marinas cameras- they didnt see me. When the security guard came up, I told Mama to make him forget we were here.
What if I dont do it?
I will know, Mama. See, I am inside your head. DO IT!! DO IT NOW!! He just walked on by.

I took her to the boat. I was trying to cast off when she tried to escape. So, I hit her and we left the marina. I took her out past the marker, to the open sea. When she woke up I had her set up a shell in my mind. She did that all the time for people that paid her to, like politicians and shit.
I had her set up the shell to show that I was working on my truck all night, and didnt know she was even gone.
Do this right, Mama. I will know if you set it to break on another screamers contact. I could feel her fear. It started calling to me in a way that makes me feel like I am flying. I started hitting her, and it increased. I could hear her thoughts crawling around inside her head like little snakes.

Oh, God, he is going to rape me! her mind told me. That was when something inside me said why not? Look at all the pain she has caused you.

I had been with a girl before, so I knew what to do. Once I started I couldnt stop until I had finished. I fed on her fear- it was the best thing I had ever felt. I did it to her until I couldnt get it up anymore. By then, she was so weak, she couldnt stand and she was bleeding real bad from her private parts. Please Robert, dont kill me! Please baby, I am so sorry.
Beg me, Mama, like I begged you when I was little.
Please, Robert, please dont hurt me.
NO, MAMA! NO! JUST LIKE YOU SAID NO TO ME!!. I knew that the blood would draw the sharks. I knocked her out by bashing her head on the deck. Then I took the pry bar from its place and went below decks. I reversed the flow of the bilge pump, and made six large holes in the hull of the boat. Once the water was flowing, I jumped in the water and started swimming toward shore.

It took three days before my brothers came home and found Mom missing. I told them I had been working. They went to the cops like I knew they would. When the screamer cop looked, all she found was the shell and she wasnt strong enough to break it. Mama was a PSR 45- she made shells all the time. Eventually, they had to stop looking, and I went on with my life.

I learned how to drive big trucks and have been doing it ever since. I find screamers, and if they are stupid enough to get close enough, then I teach them. I dont go looking for them- if they come to me, then I teach them their lessons. Once I make them mine, if they are within a few miles I can hear them. You havent told, have you my little Screamer? No, because if you do, I will make you feel this. then I give them what Mama felt when the sharks ate her. They stay quiet little screamers then. All the screamers need to be quiet.

Allison looked over at the guy. His surface thoughts were about getting back on the road. He wanted his bonus, and to visit Mama. She looked over her shoulder at him.
Hey there. My names Allison.
Hi. Im Rob.
So, why are you in a dive like this?
Its close to the garage thats fixing my truck.
Oh, so you go all over the island, huh?
Yeah, all over. he told her.
What do you haul?
Mostly boxes of stuff. But, sometimes I do refrigerator runs. I dont like them much, though. You always feel rushed with em.
She looked at him- he was so shy, and he seemed so sweet. Hey, you want to get something to eat?

Sure. he told her. Do you mind if we get my trailer? I really dont need it getting broken into.
Sure, she told him, Not a problem.
They fall for it every time, dont they. They cant see the dark parts- I wont let them. Its over this way. he told her. There is a short cut through the alley.

He got about half way down the alley when he made like he dropped his keys.
She was bending over to help find his keys when he grabbed her. So you think I am sweet dont you little screamer.  That surprised Allison, because she hadnt felt a telepathic presence when they were talking. Couldnt feel me, could you, bitch! Its because I didnt want you to!
She tried to send to her mother or Duncan, but her thoughts didnt go anywhere. You cant call anyone. You wont scream any more, little bitch, and mommy and big brother cant help. He was stronger than he looked. He back handed her and had her pinned under him. Im going to make you wish you never learned how to scream.
He ripped her pants. He had a roll of electrical tape and had her hands taped together before she knew what he was doing. Once he had done that, he used his free hand to undo his pants. Alison forced her mind to stop reeling.

Trying to remember what mommy told you? Should have paid more attention to her lessons. She told you dont rely on you telepathic abilities because they may not work some times, like now. Oh, you can move things and yourself too. Well, try it! I dare you! Alison tried her telekinesis, then she tried to teleport. Nothing happened- he was a psi-scrambler!
Oh, God, he is going to kill me! was all she could think.
Im going to do this any time I want. You are my property now. Just like the others. He showed her as he raped her: the other women all over the island that he had done this to. He knew where all of them were at all times. That he could torment them whenever he wished. He had visited some of them more then once. He always visited the stronger ones more then once. She was the strongest he had felt since his mother.
Oh, God, you did this to your own mother!! She knew his secret- that only made him angry. Now he would have to make her disappear, too
Alison saw her opening and took it. She snaked her legs up and with all her might, she kicked him in the ribs. It took her a few seconds to get up. He recovered, and was on her again. With all her strength, she hit him on the side of the head with her still bound hands. She ran past the dumpster, hitting the small button on her watch with her nose.
Carl, Mayday! Send me home! she shouted.

She was transported to the house, materializing just outside her mothers office. Mom, help. was all she was able to say before her mother picked her up and was carrying her to the holodeck.

Carl, I want Julian. Allison could hear the steel in her mothers voice. I want you to sit still for a minute, baby.
Allison sat there as a myriad of flashing lights went off in front of her face. She needed a few seconds to clear the flash blindness from her eyes. By then, her mother had removed the tape from her hands. Baby, Julian has to examine you. Lay down. Mother told her.
She did all that she was told, but she couldnt feel anymore. She closed her eyes for a moment- when she opened them, Duncan was standing there. Show me what happened, sis. he said. It all came flooding back then, the whole experience, along with all that he had shown her. She had felt all the other rapes he had committed from both his perspective and the victims, including his mothers and her death. Inside, she wanted to just curl up and die.
Please, Andrea, I dont want to live. Allison thought. It was as if her mother had heard that.
No, little one, you will live through this, I promise. Now, I want you to go to sleep. When you wake up, you will feel better. I promise. Allison tried to stop thinking about it- she really did. She felt it more than heard it. So this was the voice. she thought. SLEEP
