Here I would just like to tell you a little about Buddy. What he does, what he eats, the little things he does. Just like a wild rabbit, you dont see much of Buddy. He sleeps most of the day, or whatever he does under the couch or bed!! One thing I do know he does under the couch is tear up the carpet. That is only the second destructive thing he has done in his whole time living free in the house, first thing chewing through one cord. He could always be heard chewing something under the couch, but after checking several times I concluded he was only chewing on the wooden under frame. Not to long ago I checked what he had been up too under there after hearing alot of complaining from household members about all the racket he was making under there. Well that little stinker had been going to town on the carpet!! Granted theres several bare spots now under there, but I dont mind. If thats all hes going to do is chew under the couch, I'm not going to complain. I bought a few carpet runners and laid them under there for him to go crazy on instead, and let me tell you hes done a job on them too!! He surprises me sometimes that hes still able to fit under the couch, he certainly can flatten himself quite well apparently. Buddy usually comes out in the morning for a little to eat then hes gone till evening. When I have the house bunnies running in the dining room, Buddy will sit on the other side of the gate and wait for me to put the bunnies away so he can come in. Hes so cute, sometimes I dont move fast enough and he nudges the gate. If I lay on the floor and all is quiet, I love when he hops onto my back and maybe chews on my hair, or comes up to me and puts his nose in my face. I hope thats his way of being affectionate and telling me he loves me. At night when I'm sleeping, sometimes he'll jump onto the couch onto my leg. Several times hes startled me and I've jumped and hes ran away, which I always feel terrible about. But a few nights ago I was sleeping on the couch and he awoke me by landing on my leg, and I lay as still as I could. He jumped onto the top of the couch and started running lickety split back and forth up there. I told him he was silly, and he went to take off again but lost his footing and slipped off the back. I hopped up and looked over the back of the couch and he was just sitting there, looking a bit embarrased! Then the next night as I slept on the couch again, I was awoken by him doing what felt like a little dance on my legs. When Buddy touches me of his own free will......be still my heart. I just wish for time to stop and for Buddy to stay right there. When I sleep on the couch, I will watch him until I fall asleep. Watching him is like counting sheep for me, I could watch him endlessly. The night he was dancing on my legs I watched him side step over to my bowl of grapes on the floor and swipe one, like he was trying not to be noticed. He can be a silly boy too. He does binkies like the house bunnies, altho I'm not sure if they mean the same thing. Wild rabbits run quick and kick their legs out and spin in mid air as a way of escaping predators and making a break in theiir scent trail. I dont know what Buddy could be escaping when I'm just sitting here alone with him, but I like to think what hes doing is a happy bunny dance as well. He'll run one way with a flash of his cottontail and spin around and stop, looking at me. I'll say 'you silly rabbit!!" and off he goes again!! Sometimes I engage him to play, which he seems to tell me I'm working his nerves more then hes having fun!! I creep my hand along the floor and tell him I'm going to get him, and he'll crouch low, give me a dirty look and come charging at my hand. He'll jump straight into the air, or jump over a few inches and then run up to my hand and bat at it with his front feet. Then he'll run off a foot or so away then turn back around and come back and bat at my hand again. By the time he gets tired of beating me up, my hand looks a bit like I drug it thru a prickly rose bush, but I dont mind at all. Hes never bitten me, never tried to hurt me, and sometimes I can figure out what hes trying to tell me. Since he was a young baby, if I reached out to him and he didnt want to be bothered, he would put my finger in his mouth and move my hand away. 'Get out of my space!!' I always thought that was the cutest thing. He'll follow you to the kitchen when he wants a treat, of course never daring to go INTO the kitchen and step on the linoleum. Just as when he goes upstairs or comes back down, he jumps from the steps to the carpet or vice versa to avoid the foyer floor. Buddy use to eat rabbit pellets, timothy hay and oats, but since he has gotten older he doesnt seem to care for those anymore. Everyday I would pick him plates of weeds from the yard, that was his main diet, but with winter coming, there is nothing but slowly browning grass and a few rose leaves to pick. I buy him vegys at the store and give him a variety of these everyday. Kale, endive, parsley, green leaf and romaine lettuce, carrots and their tops (which again, since hes gotten older he doesnt care for the carrots like he use too in his younger days) spinach, radish tops, cabbage, and if I'm lucky, I sometimes find dandelion leaves at the grocery store. He loves green grapes, apple slices, soda and ritz crackers. Strawberry poptarts, strawberry filled fig type cookies, iced oatmeal cookies, cinnamon crackers and cookies, fruity pebbles, capn crunch and trix. He loves cherry flavored craisins and regular raisins, standing high on his tippy toes to let you know he wants a treat, which always sends me running to the kitchen to find him one. And if he doesnt seem interested in what I've brought, I run back for something else!! He is truly the bunny who runs my days. |
