Awareness to check cholera epidemic in Lucknow.
Sponsored by:
UNICEF, L UCKNOW.

Inadequate sanitation, poor maintenance of comunity water supplies, leakage of water from the joints and the seapage of foetal matter with the main system of water delivery are few cause for the random outbreak of cholera in Lucknow. Pressed with this situation, some localities of Lucknow were gripped into the cholera epidemic few years back. The state administration and local auhtorities responsible for managing the municipal functions were agog with the situation and the hospitals were running short of beds to accomodate the increasing number of patients from the different localities affected by the dreaded disease. The situation was further compounded by the blockage of filth and garbage in the ever choked drainage system and the sanitation touched its lowest level due to rains. At this time, the voluntary help was rendered by the organisation through the financial support avaialble from the Upper India Office of the UNICEF to help arrest the cholera epidemic in the town- the capital of  Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow. The volunteers of SAES were pressed into the emergency services to disperse lime fortified with 5% lindane on the open feaces and garbage being dumped along side the drains and other open spaces in various localities. Immediate arrangements were made to create awareness in the masses by specifying various "do's" and "dont's" in local hindi and urdu language and were distributed in the affected areas through the volunteers of SAES/ERL. Audio recording was done to spread the  environmental health message and the same was relayed through the van of SAES/ERL duly fitted with audio and video facility. The results started pouring in with in 48 hours and the situation was saved from turning bad to worse. It was a good show of well drawn contigent plan to over come environmental health problem at mass scale. Others NGOs also participated in a big way and the epidemic was arrested within time!  Sensing the trouble to move to the nearby areas, especially those adjoining the municipal limits, were focussed in subsequent days to share this awareness programme with a view to ward off human susceptibility to the infection being caused by Cholera Vibrio.
