The National Dairy Development Board under its Technology Mission on Dairy sponsored a research project to ERL on the occurrence of pesticide residues in milk & milk products, as their consequent impact on human health is assuming a national significance. A study was undertaken to place a clear picture of the magnitude and consequent health implications of the problem in front of dairy planners and policy makers so that the appropriate and timely measures can be adopted to check the contamination of the milk by pesticide residues. Six cities namely, Chandigarh(North), Hydrabad(South), Calcutta(East), Bombay(West), Lucknow & Jaipur(Central) were selected and milk samples were collected and analyzed for the following pesticide residues : HCH, DDT & DDE etc.. Alarmingly high concentration of pesticide residues were found in samples of some cities. The results and information derived should be vital inputs for the planning of dairy activities in the country by the concerned agencies. The report is being submitted.
