Thomas Dergin and his wife Elizabeth first appear
at Lark Harbour,
Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, Canada circa 1840. At that time the area was called
the
French Shore and it was a wilderness, bereft of churches, schools, and the vestiges of
civilization. Thomas died in the 1840s and his
widow Elizabeth remarried to a Frenchman, Prosper Companion.
Thomas and Elizabeth Dergin/Derrigun/Dargin/Darrigan had a least
three children:
1) Mary, born circa 1814
married Richard
Wheeler
2) Maurice, born ?
died 1880, Frenchman's
Cove
married and had a
large family
3) Thomas, born 20 February 1827
died 1 May 1846
All of the Darrigans on the West Coast of Newfoundland are
descended from Maurice Darrigan. He served as the area school
teacher so he had received an education prior to immigrating
with his parents to the Bay of Islands.
