                        INTRODUCTION

This document is not only a record of the Dargan Family Tree, it is also a record of the typical Irish Immigrants who left their homes more than 140 years ago, to settle in a strange and unknown colony

They were not wealthy, or titled, or privileged people, they brought with them few worldly goods and possessions, they came because they saw little opportunity in Ireland and chose to seek a better life, that they succeeded is a tribute to their courage, determination, and hard work

As members of the family, I believe we can feel justly proud of their achievements, it would be an injustice on our part, to allow their names to be lost to future generations

No family history can ever be complete, there will always be new information that comes to light, each year a little more history disappears, with the passing  of those who came before us

This document is written with the confidence that we are not so far removed from our ancestors that we cannot appreciate  the hardships they faced

There will be errors and inaccuracies in this document some will occur through lack of information, some through the frailties of human memory, but as far as possible, the information provided has been entered exactly

Unfortunately it is not possible to mention individually, the host of family members and friends who have been so generous in contributing their time and knowledge, to assist with this venture

To all those people, I am greatly indebted, this family history could not have been written without them

                          Foreword

Origin of the [ O ] Dargan, Dorgan Name

The Gaelic name O Deargain, the root of which is the adjective Dearg [ red ] has taken the Anglicised form Dargan in Leinster, and Dorgan in Munster, the latter is almost confined to County Cork, where there is a place named Ballydorgan, while respectable families of Durgan have long been resident in the Midland Counties, as a Gaelic Sept they were of little importance, so they seldom figure in the Annuals the Book of Rights, Fiants the topographical poems, an Leavhar Muimhneach, or any of the usual sources of genealogical information

Throughout this document I have entered the family surname as Dargan, although in many documents the spelling of the surname has varied greatly

Also in this document when the word about appears in conjunction with the year and place of registration, this information in most cases has been taken from NSW BDM Records

I have also entered the ages of people and the dates as listed on various documents, in some cases if you were to add or subtract one date from another there may be a discrepancy in the date of the year arrived at, which may lead you to ask the question, which one of the two entries is correct

            Chapter One, County Tipperary Ireland

Tipperary is a inland County of Ireland, province of Muster, bounded north by the Kings and Queens Counties, east by Queens and Kilkenny Counties, south by Waterford and Cork, and west by Limerick, Clare, and Galway, length from north to south is 73 and a half miles, breadth 39 and a half miles, area 1420 square miles, or 882398 acres

The lands of Tipperary have always been ranked amongst the most productive in Ireland, it has however always been a great grazing county, it also has extensive tracks of bog and mountains, south of a range of bog and between the small towns of Kinnenaule and the County of Kilkenny is the coal district, the high hills adjoining Limerick are called the Keepe Mountains, in this district are lead and copper mines, and some parts of it afford fine mill stones, the rivers are the Suir and its tributaries, the chief towns are Clonmel, Cashell, Toscrea, Nenegh, Tipperary, and Carrick, the population in 1826 353402

Chapter Two, The Great Famine 1845 - 1847

In the period before the great famine, immigration from Tipperary chiefly consisted of Protestants who settled in Canada

During the great famine, mass immigration from Tipperary began,  people from this area were scattered all over the world, in the main however people from south Tipperary settled in Australia

Tipperarys population reached a peak of 436000 in 1841 following the large scale failure of the potato crop, the population declined rapidly, almost 70000 people died in the county between 1845 and 1850 particularly in the years 1849 and 1850

Between 1841 and 1891 about 190000 people are estimated to have immigrated from Tipperary, in the same period the rural population fell from 364000 to 134000 and the town population fell from 71000 to 39000

Relief committees were active in Tipperary during this period and saved many from starvation, but many perished from hunger and disease in the infamous work houses or on the road side

         Chapter Three, Assisted Immigration Schemes

The main purpose of assisted immigration was to facilitate passage to the colony, of those sections of society whose skills were much in demand, but could not afford the 40 pounds for a steerage passage to Sydney, when New York or Boston could be reached for about 5 pounds

In 1849 owing to the great demand for passage, following the great famine, a sliding scale of immigration contribution was devised according to age and occupation, the lowest contribution of 2 pounds was paid by those occupational groups most in demand in New South Wales, agricultural labourers, farm servants, female domestics, and shepherds, but their passage was free in all other aspects and no obligation was placed on them to repay any portion of the balance of the fare, providing they hired out for wages in New South Wales

Under the assisted immigration loan system married tradesmen with families received a 20 pound grant towards the cost of the families voyage to Sydney, the balance of the passage money had to be found by the immigrants themselves and a contract entered into to repay the 20 pounds advanced to them

Throughout the nineteenth century the main method of obtaining assisted passage to New South Wales, was firstly by application to an official recruiting agent in Ireland, or by being nominated by friends or relatives already in New South Wales, in 1848 the Colonial Government introduced remittance regulations, whereby residents of New South Wales could upon payment of a portion of the passage money in the colony have their nominees brought from Ireland  at government expense

One of the first immigration schemes to operate in New South Wales was the Bounty Scheme

As the land grants in the colony had finished, and the government was selling the land off, the Bounty Scheme allowed for the monies that were raised from the sale of land, was used to pay the immigrants fare

The immigrants had to produce references of good character, as the elite in the colony did not want the poor houses in Ireland emptied out and for them to be sent to New South Wales

Officials at government immigrant depots set up at the embarkation ports of Berkin Head, Plymouth, and Southampton would not permit immigrants to embark unless they provided themselves with a substantial sea chest of clothing appropriate to a lengthy sea voyage between 3 and 4 months, and on which extremes of climate were experienced, the clothing requirement for single women in 1849 was, 6 shifts, 2 flannel petticoats, 6 pairs of stockings, 2 pairs of shoes, 2 gowns, and an ample supply of sheets, towels, and soap, the government estimated the cost of these items in 1854 to be about 5 pounds
