The
importance of Salaat in Islam can never be over-emphasised. We have learnt from
the Hadith of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam)
Muslim Brothers and Sisters: Consider these virtues of Fajr
in the Masjid.
The harms of not performing Fajr in the Masjid with Jamaat
Factors that will assist in performing Fajr
·
“
Salaat was the first and foremost thing ordained by Allah, and it shall be the
first and foremost thing to be reckoned for on the Day of Judgement.”
·
“ Fear Allah in the matter of Salat! Fear Allah in the
matter of Salaat!! Fear Allah in the matter of Salaat!!!.
·
“
Salat intervenes between man and Shirk.”
·
“
Of all things been ordained by Allah, Iman and Salat are the most valued. If
there were any other thing better than Salat, then Allah would have ordained it
for His Angels, some of whom are always in ‘Ruku’ and others in ‘Sajdah.”
·
“ Salat is the pillar of Islam.”
·
“Salat
abases the Devil.”
·
“ Salat is the light of a Mo’min.”
·
“
Salat is the best ‘Jihad.”
·
“ Allah keeps relenting towards a person so long as he is
engaged in Salat.”
·
“
When a calamity befalls us from the heaven, people frequenting the Masjid are
spared and saved.”
·
“ If some major sins of a Muslim land him in Hell, the fire
would not burn those parts of his body which have touched the ground while he
was in Sajdah during his Salat.”
·
“
Fire has been forbidden to touch those parts of the body which touch the ground
while performing the Sajdah.”
·
“ Of all the practices, Salat made at fixed hours is most
loved by Allah.”
·
“
Allah likes most the posture of a person when he is in Sajdah pressing his
forehand on the ground in humility.”
·
“ A person in Sajdah is nearest unto Allah.”
·
“
Salat is a key to Paradise.”
·
“ When a person stands in Salat the gates of Paradise are
let open and all the veils between him and Allah are lifted (provided that he
spoils not his Salat by coughing e.t.c.).”
·
“
A person in Salat (so to say) knocks at the door of the sovereign Lord and the
door is always opened for him who knocks.”
·
“
The position of Salat in Islam is as
the position of the head in a body.”
·
“
Salat is the light of heart. Let those who wish enlighten their hearts through
Salat.”
·
“
Any strip of earth, on which Allah is remembered in Salat, takes pride over the
rest of the earth.”
·
“ A person who performs two ‘rakats of Salat’ in seclusion,
where no-body except Allah and His Angels see him, receives a writ of
deliverance from the fire of hell.”
·
“
Fire of Hell is forbidden and the Paradise becomes due to a person who performs
his ‘Wudhu’ properly and says his Salat conscientiously, according to its
regulations.”
It has been reported that Nabi
(SAW) said: "Salaat constitutes the foundation of Deen. He who establishes
Salaat has verily upheld his Deen. He who is neglectful of his Salaat has
destroyed the very edifice of his Deen." (Targhib)
We can gauge from this hadith what
an integral aspect of our Deen our Salaat constitutes and how meticulous we
have to be with regards to our adherence to it. Without salaat no real Deen
remains and we become Muslim in name and prime targets for the enemies of
Islam.
Of utmost importance is that we at
least become firm with regards to our Faraidh (compulsory Salaat). So beautiful
and intriguing is the system of Allah Ta'ala that adherence to just the Fardh
Salaat incorporates within it the complete 24 hours of every day. Prior to
Dhuhr, a conscientious Musalli purifies himself and mentally prepares himself
for admission into the court of the Supreme King, Allah, in order to carry out
the trust which even the mountains shuddered to accept. He presents himself
early at the Masjid hastening for the first Saff in order to get closer to
Allah and performs his Sunnat Salaat in anticipation of the great responsibility
(the Fardh) which is about to come.
Dhuhr has been discharged, however
his heart anticipates the encroachment of the Fardh of Asr. Barely has he
enmeshed himself in crying out to the King of Kings, at Asr, when he realises
that Maghrib is almost upon him. The first seconds of the nightfall descends
while the servant of Allah prostrates himself in the epitome of submission to
the Maker of nightfall. Hardly has he recovered from the bliss of his communion
when the Adhaan of Esha is called out.
He revels in the bliss of sweet
exultation with his beloved in the dying moments of his waking hours and retire
to bed with the sweet anticipation of standing up once again before his Maker
as dawn etches along the horizon. Thus the circle goes on.
Thus we can easily understand how
essential absolute adherence to Salaat is and how the whole day is incorporated
within it and centres around it. When one attains this state of mind then one
could well imagine it becoming difficult to break any of Allah's Laws. One has
become so aware of Allah Ta'ala that he is either waiting for our performing
Salaat. An apt illustration of the Qur'anic verse: "Verily Salaat
stops one from shameless and evil deeds" (29:45).
A truly magnificent gift from
Allah Ta'ala indeed befitting the superlative manner in which it was handed
over to the Ummah i.e., on the blessed occasion of the Me'raj.
ALL
YOUR PRAYERS ARE INVALID IF YOUR GHUSL IS NOT CORRECT.
CLEANLINESS IS HALF OF FAITH. HERE IS THE METHOD OF GHUSL
ACCORDING TO SUNNAH.
Before making Ghusl one should
make Niyyah (intention) thus: - "I am performing Ghusl so as to become
Paak." Without Niyyah, there is no Thawaab (reward) although Ghusl will be
valid. Ghusl should be made in a place of total privacy and one should not face
towards the Kiblah while making Ghusl. Ghusl may be performed standing or
seated, preferably seated. Use sufficient water, don't skimp nor be wasteful.
One should abstain from speaking while performing Ghusl. It is better not to
read any Kalimah or Aayah while bathing. Be aware of these rules whilst making
Ghusl.
PROCEDURE FOR PERFORMING GHUSL:
Wash both hands up to and
including wrists.
Wash the private parts. The hands
and private parts should be washed even if one is not in the state of Janaabat
or Najaasat.
If there is Najaasat elsewhere on
the body, it should now be washed off.
Perform Wudhu (Read separate
pamphlet for Wudhu according to Sunnah). If making Ghusl on a stool or platform
where water will rapidly flow away, and then perform the complete Wudhu. If
there is fear of the feet being immersed in wastewater during the Ghusl then
postpone the washing of the feet to the end of the Ghusl. Ensure that the mouth
and nostrils are thoroughly rinsed thrice.
After performing Wudhu, pour water
over the head thrice, then pour thrice over right shoulder and thrice again
over left shoulder. Now pour water over entire body and rub. If the hair of the
head is not plaited, it is compulsory to wet all the hair up to the very base.
If a single hair is left dry, Ghusl will not be valid. If the hair of a woman
is plaited, she is excused from loosening her plaited hair, but it is
compulsory for her to wet the base of each and every hair. If one fails to do
this then the Ghusl will not be valid. As for men who grow long hair and plait
them, they are NOT excused from leaving their hair dry. If a woman experiences
difficulty or is unable to wet the very bottom of her plaited hair, then it is
necessary for her to unplaite her hair and wash her entire head. It is Mustahab
(preferable) to clean the body by rubbing it. All parts of the body should be
rubbed with the hand so as to ensure that water has reached all parts of the
body, and that no portion is left dry. Rings and earrings, etc. should be moved
so as to ensure that no portion covered by them is left dry. Ensure that the
navel and the ears are all wetted. If they are not wet Ghusl will be
incomplete.
On completion one should confine
oneself to a clean place. If, while performing Wudhu, the feet had been washed,
it is not necessary to wash them again. Dry the body with a clean towel, and
dress as hastily as possible.
If, after Ghusl, one recalls that
a certain portion of the body is left dry, it is not necessary to repeat the
Ghusl, but merely wash the dry portion. It is not sufficient to pass a wet hand
over the dry place. If one has forgotten to rinse the mouth or the nostrils,
these too could be rinsed when recalled after Ghusl has been performed.
The three Faraa'ids (compulsory
acts) of Ghusl are: -

The Prophet has mentioned in an authentic hadith, \"Whoever needs to pray
but feels he has to go to the bathroom, go to the bathroom first.\"
Even if this means the person may miss the beginning of Jumaa Salaat, answer
the call to nature first. By doing so, it will help the person to
concentrate better during Salaat.
In a second authentic hadith, The Prophet has mentioned, \"Whenever the
praying person feels sleepy, it is better for him/her to sleep, then pray when
he wakes up.\" Otherwise, if the person is too sleepy he may make
dua against himself.
Also, if getting ready to pray and food is around you, It is better to eat and
pray afterwards, otherwise you will think of the food while you are
praying. The Prophet (saw) has said that there is no prayer when there
are 2 things:
1) When the food is ready
2) If one has to use bathroom
There are so many hadiths that the
prophet avoided these distractions and didn’t like the people to have them. In
an authentic Hadith, the Prophet mentioned, \" while you are in Salat you
are calling on Allah and making dua to him so you need to concentrate on your
thoughts, and whatever you recite.\" Also at the end of the hadith
the prophet said, \"do not raise your voice if you are praying alone, or
if you are praying with people around you don’t raise your voice and confuse
the other people.\"
Also, if you are making dhikr or reciting Qur’an and there are other people
around, don’t raise your voice so that you distract the people around
you. So the recommendation is for everyone to be quiet so that the others
can concentrate.
The Sunnah for the followers of the Imam when praying is, that nothing can be
heard from them except there saying Ameen. In another authentic hadith, the
prophet has said, \"To pray as though you know that this will be your last
Salat.\"
Some of the scholars of the tabi\'in have said that they would remember before
they were praying, they would imagine that the angel of death was coming to
take their soul. When the prophet prayed he used to imagine the paradise on his
right, and the hellfire on his left, and Allah in front of him. The thing to
remember is, if you do not have khushoo that you will be missing part or all of
the reward for your Salat. Also if praying in line behind an Imam, we have so
many hadith to straighten the lines, foot to foot and shoulder to
shoulder. The Prophet has said, \"verily I can see the shaytan
running between you through the gaps/ holes between you.\"
The feet should be straight towards the qibla, so that you and your neighbour
can be next to each other, foot to foot, ankle to ankle, knee to knee,
shoulder to shoulder. And keep your eyes on the place of sujood. Whenever
the prophet would say Allah akbar he would put his head down to put the right
hand over the left and on the chest, and to close the gaps in the line
Keep in mind that Allah is looking at you, also do not think about the people
around you. Be careful about your intention and remember that Allah is in
front of you. And remember the death and imagine the paradise on your
right and the hellfire on your left, and the angel of death coming from behind
you to take your soul.

Naufil bin Muawiyah (Radhiallaho
anho) narrates that he heard the prophet (Sallallho alaihe wasallam) saying, “
A person who has missed one Salat is like one who has lost all his family and
wealth.”
Ibn Abbas (Radhiallaho
anho) narrates that he heard the prophet (Sallallho alaihe wasallam) saying, “
A person who combines two Salats without any strong excuse reaches one of the
doors of ‘Kabir’ (major sins).”
Abdullah bin Amr
(Radhiallaho anho) narrates that once the Prophet (Sallallho alaihe wasallam)
while talking about Salat said: “ For its votary, Salat shall on the Day of
Judgement, be a light for him, an argument in his favour and a means of his
deliverance. Whereas there will be no light, no defence and no deliverance from
doom for him who does not guard his Salat and he shall meet the fate of
Pharaoh, Hamaan and Ubbay bin Khalaf.”
Ibn Hajar
while quoting this Hadith, has also mentioned Qaroon with Pharaoh and others,
He writes: “ Sharing the fate of these people on the Day of Judgement is due to
the fact that it is often the pursuits specific to these guilty persons which
cause neglect of Salat. If, therefore, a person neglects Salat due to craving
for wealth, he will meet the fate of Qaroon: if due to love of power, then that
of Pharaoh; if due to a yearning for attachment to a ruler, then that of
Hamaan; and if due to occupation in trade then that of Ubbay Bin Khalaf.”
“The prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) is reported to have said, “A
person neglecting his salaat (even though he makes it up later) shall remain in
Hell for a period of one ‘Huqb’. A ‘Huqb’ is equal to eighty years of three
hundred and sixty days each, and a day in the Hereafter shall equal one
thousand years of this world”
Ibn Hajar
writes, “A women died. Her brother was present at her burial. By chance his
purse fell into the grave and was buried with dead body. The brother realised
this after he had returned home and was very sorry for the loss. He decided to
dig up the grave secretly and take out the purse. When he dug it up, he saw
that the pit was in flames. He returned home stricken with grief and related
the story to his mother, and inquired if she knew why it was so. The mother
informed him that his sister used to delay in salaat and offered it after its
fixed hours.
Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah
(Radhiallaho anho) narrates, “The Holy Prophet (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam)
once said ‘The worst thief is one who steals from his Salaat.’ The companions
inquired, ‘How can one steal from his Salaat? O Prophet of Allah! He replied,
‘When one does not do his ‘Ruku’ and ‘Sajdah’ properly.
