Following is some
documentation of the terrible misrepresentation and gross impressionistic use
of the media to attempt to sway the public
opinion of Islam to equal terrorism. For all those living in the west,
and thinking that their press is truly free and a pure representation of all
the facts, think again. There is much which you do not realize.

REPORT LINKS MUSLIM PRAYERS TO TERRORISM
(OTTAWA, CANADA - 7/16/01) - The Canadian office of the Council on
American- Islamic Relations (CAIR-CAN) is calling on the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation (CBC) to apologize for a news report that seemed to link Muslim
prayers to the issue of terrorism.
The report on the conviction of an Algerian national for conspiracy to
commit terrorism was broadcast July 13 on the CBC National News. With the call
to prayer in the background, reporter Adrienne Arsenault stated:
"...and
that a number of Algerian émigrés in Montreal had also discussed blowing up an
Israeli building in a Canadian neighbourhood in the summer of 1999, a plan
devised by people with contacts and a history of terrorism..."
Images of Muslim worshippers in a Canadian mosque, along with a minaret were
shown during Ms. Arsenault's voice-over. To see a video of the full report, go

"The images, combined with Ms.
Arsenault's commentary, clearly implied a link
between potential violence, mosques and Canadian Muslim worshippers.
This kind of sensationalistic and irresponsible reporting can only induce
suspicion of ordinary Canadian Muslims in the minds of the public," said
lawyer Faisal Kutty, a member of the CAIR-CAN Board. "It also contradicts
testimony given by witnesses at the very trial covered by Arsenault. Namely,
that the conspirators
avoided the mosques or approaching Muslims active in the mosques," he
added.
Kutty added that stereotyping of Muslims and Islam is a key factor in many
incidents of anti-Muslim discrimination and harassment.
In February, vandals attacked the Manitoba Islamic Center in Winnipeg, smearing
the front of the mosque with animal feces, eggs and white paint. Garbage was
also thrown in the area of the mosque. The attack followed a similar incident
that occurred in December.
In November, prior to the start of the month of Ramadan, a suspicious fire
caused heavy damage to a mosque in Surrey, B.C. No injuries were reported.
Prime Minister Jean Chretien sent a message of concern and sympathy to Muslims
across Canada, saying "Canadians abhor any cowardly and vicious act of
hate."
CAIR-CAN has filed a formal complaint about with the Office of the CBC
Ombudsman to conduct an independent review of this incident.

There are approximately 650,000 Muslims in Canada.
CAIR-N. CALIF: RADIO STATION APOLOGIZES FOR
OFFENSIVE REMARKS
CAIR Northern California, the Islamic Society of San Francisco and members of
the Muslim community met last week with the editorial board of ABC affiliate,
KGO AM 810 Radio in San Francisco to discuss derogatory statements made by talk
show host Jean Burns.
On June 1, 2001, during a program regarding the situation in Palestine, Burns
stated on air that "Islam is a murderous, false religion and its adherents
are murderous false believers." CAIR met with KGO Radio President and
General Manager Michael Luckoff, Program Director Ken Berry, and News Director
Gregory P. Tantum, who all apologized for Burns' offensive comments.
KGO officials agreed to open lines of communications with the Muslim
Community. CAIR will work with the station to facilitate programming dealing
with Islam as well as providing an Islamic viewpoint on various subjects. KGO
and CAIR are also looking into the possibility of sensitive training in the
near future as well as possible internship opportunities for Muslim students

A WAR SHROUDED IN SILENCE
Increasingly, Chechen civilians are vanishing in 'sweeps' by Russian
troops. Many are never found, but one family's tragedy offers a glimpse behind
a veil of secrets.
