Happiness Is Measured Out In Miles

CHAPTER TWENTY SIX

My heart started beating fast. All the memories from the last time I had seen Paul came to my heart. I looked at John with a rapid eye movement. He was there, oblivious to anything, just waiting for an answer from me. But I was nervous. I tried to remember Edu’s advice but somehow I couldn’t. So I tried to sound normal, but I think my voice trembled a little.

The next day John and the Beatles went to the recording studio to record some songs for their upcoming album. I was feeling too lazy to go back to University and my driving licence could wait a little bit more. I would resume it when John went on tour. But I went to Eli’s to see how she was doing.

As usual, she was happy, smiling and glad to see me. I told her everything about Edu, that she was feeling on top form again, although she wasn’t coming back to England at the moment. I also told her I was glad that Paul was buying a new car. But as soon as I named Paul, her expression changed, Oh, God! Was it possible that Paul might have told her something about us? Well, then I realised that was crap, for she wouldn’t have received me with that smile the first time she had seen me. Then she grabbed my arm:

I decided to stay to have lunch. She told me things about her holidays with Paul and Ringo. It seemed that had gone to the Virgin islands and she had had the chance to meet Maureen, Ringo’s girlfriend.

- "Oh!"; I said. "I hope he brings her to some party. I’m dying to meet her", Eli told me things about her and soon it was time for me to go home. John came, as usual, late. They were picking up the habit of going into the recording studio at night. John said they could work at it better, with nobody disturbing them and stuff. When he told me, I didn't like the idea. That meant we could hardly see each other, since I'd probably have things to do in the morning. But he assured me he would find the time to be with me.

The next day passed by very slowly. As an exception, the Beatles went to the studio in the morning to have the night free, which was when we would go to a party and when Paul would show us his new car. I had thought about going shopping, but then decided not to. There were again lots of crazy fans on the front door and now I only wanted to go out with the help of Neil or Mal, never on my own. Every time I moved the curtains of the windows, the fans down started screaming and that scared the hell out of mw. John also started to get fed up with them. It wasn’t an utopia now that John was looking for a new house to live.

John came home at around 19.00 p.m., got changed and told me to do the same. I decided on some new garments I had brought from Spain. I wore black tight trousers, with a matching top and my hair in the style of fashion. As usual, John complimented me:

There was a limo waiting for us at the door. Lots of girls started screaming and threw themselves at John, but Mal was there and we were soon safely seated in the back of the limo. My heart was beating fast again. I think I never got used to the fans after the dreadful miscarriage I had. John saw my white complexion.

The party turned out to be at the Savile Theatre. It seemed that the Savile was own by Brian and we had it today for ourselves. When we arrived, there I saw some non-familiar faces. John proceeded to introduce the new faces to me.

George and Pattie were chatting quite vividly with another group. So I immediately decided to avoid them and walked away to a different group but John just told me pointing at them:

- "Oh, and there are the Rolling Stones with George. Do ya remember ‘em , luv?, the truth was that I only remembered the blonde one, called Brian Jones if my mind served me right. He was accompanied by (oh, how could it be any other way?) a smashing blonde that couldn’t keep an eye off the Beatles.

- "Anyroad, let’s see what ol’ Brian has to say", and so he grabbed my hand and directed me towards the group. "Mike, Brian... Do ya remember Vicky?", well, they probably didn’t but they smiled at me and shook my hand.

- "Fine", I muttered. That Brian made me weak in the knee, I don’t know why. John laughed and took George, Brian and Mike apart. I was left alone with Pattie and Brian’s female companion.

- "Well, seems that Chelsea won’t have that colour any more", said the still unnamed girl pointing at Brian Epstein’s secretary, Wendy. Pattie looked at me, then at her, but said nothing. "My name’s Anita, by the way", she went on, stretching her hand to shake mine. I shook her hand and saw how she was observing me. She scanned me from head to toe, probably thinking I was not appropriate for a Beatle. Pattie was thinking the same as me, so she grabbed Anita by the arm and tried to divert the topic. I looked for John with my eyes, but he was in happy conversation with Brian Jones, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Victor Spinetti.

But then something saved me. Paul and Eli, the real main characters of the party, walked in holding hands. Everybody turned their heads to see them. Eli was a bit embarrassed. I knew her and she was very shy, she didn’t like being the focus of attention of everybody. But Paul... That was what he wanted.

- "Hey, Macca!", shouted John. "Show us yer car!", everybody started walking outside the theatre. Anita too. Pattie looked at me.

- "In a minute", I told her. I didn’t want to be there among all those girls who only wanted to be near the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. She shrugged and went away and I saw Eli walking towards me. I walked towards Eli. "Eli, dear, thanks for saving me", she didn’t understand. "I can’t understand Brian Jones’ girlfriend, you see. Be careful with her."

- "No, I’ll see it any other day, Eli. I don’t mind", but then John walked in, a little bit more drunk than he should shouting:

- "Where the ‘ell are ya, girl?", Eli and I looked at each other guessing that would mean problems.

Paul speeded up throughout London. He loved speeding and I was a little bit scared:

All the drive back was in awful silence. Nobody said a word and I only wanted to go to the theatre and meet John. He was waiting at the entrance:

He stopped the car at the front door. I opened the door and went out, waiting for him to do the same. But he didn’t move.
