Happiness Is Measured Out In Miles

CHAPTER SEVEN

The drive was not very long so we soon arrived at Paul’s aunt’s. The party was held in a marquee in the back garden of the house. There was lot of food and drink everywhere, and the first thing John did immediately after stepping out of the car was go to fix himself a drink. Edu and I followed him, Brian went some other way.

We walked a little bit and stopped behind a group of guys with the same hairstyle as John’s. He said:

I decided to stay away from him a little while and go talk to Edu. She was with George, it didn’t surprise me by then. I saw both of them sat at a bench and I went towards them.

Oh I didn’t know that. He was not like that when we were in Spain. I made a face and George said:

But immediately after saying that, we heard some screams. We rushed towards the screams and saw John beating up one of the guys he had introduced me early in the afternoon. I think it was Bob Wooler, but I couldn’t say because John was all over him beating him up. When Paul and Ringo took him away from the guy, I saw he was Bob Wooler. He was moaning lying on the floor. After beating Bob Wooler, John came towards me and grabbed my body.

Then George came over, and with the help of Paul, he let me go. Bob Wooler was still lying on the floor. Brian went to his rescue. He lifted him up and got him in his car.

Edu and I were really scared. The rest could know about John’s ways, but we didn’t. Paul offered to drive John, Edu and me home, and George wanted to come too (but of course, he had become Edu’s shadow), so we all jumped in Paul’s car. He started the engine. There was a terrible silence as John looked at his forefinger. He broke the silence:

We drove in silence until we reached one very big and beautiful avenue. Paul stopped the car in front of one of the houses of the avenue. John opened the door and without saying anything else, entered the gates and knocked on the door. We were all waiting in the car. I wondered why no one came to help John, but George said:

We saw a very smart woman open the door and John came in. She didn’t look our direction and closed the door. We were in the car, silent, nobody said a word. I wondered what could be wrong with John’s aunt Mimi, she couldn't be that bad. Finally Paul said:

We drove in silence. I was at the back with George and Edu, they were quite in their own world. I knew Edu was worried for me, but she was on cloud nine at the same time. I think George was quite like her, and so I was happy that she was so good with him. When we reached Brian’s house, we all stood still in the car. Nobody said anything. I finally said:

Well, the least we could do after they had so kindly offered to drive us home was invited them to have some drinks with us.

When they were all comfortable sat on the sofa, Edu asked what they wanted to drink:

I accepted and prepare two drinks for George and Paul, and two cokes for Edu and me. We all gathered on the sofa, in silence. We drank a few swigs and then Paul said:

I smiled at her but I couldn’t share her happiness due to John. Everything was going so alright. Why did he become so aggressive? And that poor Bob Wooler, whoever he was. I had to talk to John, not now, of course, it was quite late at night, but tomorrow.

The next day I tried to contact John but it was useless. When George came to see Edu I asked him if I could see John, but he told me they were going to London to record something at the Playhouse Theatre. They will be back at night, so the day after I could reach John. And so I did, or rather, he contacted me. Two days after the Bob Wooler incident and Paul’s birthday, John came home. I opened the door. We didn’t know how to react, and we only stood there staring at each other, without a word or a movement. I made room for him to enter, and so he did. He sat down on the sofa and I sat down next to him.

He was looking at the floor.

I thought it was a wonderful idea and we went to Sefton park. While we were walking through the Liverpool streets some teenage girls stopped to ask John for autographs. John signed them with a smile, but the girls looked at me in a very bitchy way.

Then John got fed up with the situation and walked ahead without paying much attention to the girls. He took my hand and walked hand in hand through the Liverpool streets.

We suddenly saw someone who looked quite familiar. As the figure approached, I realised it was actually one of the guys who had been with us at Paul’s birthday party. I couldn’t remember his name but John’s face went white as he recognised the guy. It wasn’t Bob Wooler but he had also been the victim of John’s wrath:

The guy was a little bit serious at the beginning, but John stretched his arm to shook hands with him. Then I suddenly remembered, it was Billy J. Kramer. Billy reacted and shook John’s hand:

I shook my head. Of course I didn’t mind. We went to a bar in Penny Lane and sat at a table in a corner. A few people looked at us. John and Billy took no notice. Someone came to take our order. John asked for Coke (thank God, I didn’t want any other incident!), as did Billy and myself.

John put a hand on Billy’s shoulder.

John took a piece of paper out of his jacket pocket. I recognised immediately the words on it. Written on that piece of paper were the words to Bad to me, the song he had written for me back in Spain. I looked at John in amazement. I could imagine what he was up to.

Billy smiled at me. The waiter brought us our orders and John and Billy went on talking about musical affairs. I was a little bit out of their wavelength, but I knew that was important for John, so I let it be. When we finished, John paid and went out of the cafe:

Billy smiled and we went our separate ways. I wasn’t angry at John any more. I didn’t care that he had given away his composition for me. I would always have the original and also the memories of the tape John recorded in Spain and that we listened only Edu and me. I was happy.

I took John by the hand.

I took his hand carefully to have a look at his right forefinger. He had it all swollen.

We finally got to Sefton Park. There we looked for a peaceful corner and sat down on the grass. John looked at me and stroke my hair. Then he leaned to kiss me, and I lied on my back on the grass. I loved him like mad.

We went to a stand who sold ice creams and took one each. Then we went strolling hand in hand towards my house.

I laughed and wanted to kiss him. When we arrived at Brian’s flat (I never got used to calling it my flat. During the short time I lived there, I always called it Brian’s flat), we opened the door and called for Edu and George. The house was in silence and the door was locked, so we assumed we were alone. John then took me in his arms and walked to the bedroom. He threw me onto the bed and started getting undressed. I started getting undressed too. I must admit I didn’t think of Edu and George walking on us. This was my bedroom, so that was not a problem. John leaned towards me and started kissing my toes, then went up and kissed my legs. He played a little bit with my groins. He went up and kissed all over my belly, playing with my belly button a couple of times: he licked it, kissed it, and slid his tongue in circles around it. Then he slipped a line with his tongue up my stomach and reached the breasts. He teased with my nipples for a while, first the left one, then the right one, and then kissed me on the lips. I thought hew was going to make love to me immediately after that but he whispered to me:

He went down again and started licking my most private parts. My first instinct was to close my legs. I thought that was something disgusting, and I couldn’t see the pleasure for John. My legs were rigid, and John tried to separate them with his hands.

Silence. I waited for a couple of seconds and then lifted my head to look at John straight into his eyes.

I got scared. What did he mean? Was he going to leave me after having taken my most precious gift from me? Was he going to tell me he was going to go back to Cynthia? Oh, I couldn’t wait any more.

He saw my frightened look and smiled.

I felt a lump on my throat. I wanted to be with John, that was why I had come to England, to be with him. He couldn’t leave me now.

I didn’t like that. Because that also meant he would see Cynthia. What if he finally decided to go back to her? No, that couldn’t be, oh please...!! John kissed me softly on the lips and whispered in my ears:

John went to the door and looked at me:
