Happiness Is Measured Out In Miles
CHAPTER FOUR
I was woken up the next morning with a soft blow in my left ear. At first I thought it was a fly and tried to get rid of it, but when I started hearing giggling, I had to open my eyes and turn around. I came face to face to the most beautiful thing I could have possibly seen in all my wakening: John was smiling right at me, sitting on the edge of the bed. Oh, I couldn’t let him see me this way, all ugly from sleep, so I jumped from the bed and rushed towards the bathroom to make myself visible. I heard John and Edu laugh at my reaction. I had a quick shower, washed my teeth and applied a little make up. When I thought I was pretty enough to be seen by John, I opened the door to face him.
John whistled.
And so we did. We had breakfast and spent the day the three of us together. Edu and John had lots of things in common and they discovered it that day. Edu also had a guitar and could play it well. I couldn’t make head or tails of any musical instrument. John offered to show us some interesting chords or notes, and Edu was really excited about that. We had lunch in the same restaurant Edu and I had gone the day before and in the late afternoon, we went back to the hotel and straight to John’s room.
John opened the cover of his guitar and took it out with extremely care. He handed it to Edu. Edu took it as if she had been born with a guitar between her hands. Then John started telling her:
I was completely lost and started looking out of the window. The day was wonderful. Suddenly, a lovely tune started coming out from John’s guitar. I turned round and saw Edu playing wonderfully. John was smiling and when Edu finished he and I applauded.
Oh, I thought that was a wonderful idea and I joined Edu in trying to convince John.
John smiled at me and took the guitar from Edu. He sat down on the bed and looked at me. I sat down near him (I couldn’t lose that opportunity of watching his wonderful eyes) and he stared deep into my eyes. He started playing a few notes with the guitar and then, without looking away from me but for a few times when he observed his own hands on the guitar, he started singing:
It’s not the way you smile that touched my heart
It’s not the way you kiss that tears me apart
Oh oh, many many many nights go by
I sit alone at home and I cry over you
What can I do
Can’t help myself
‘cos baby it’s you
baby it’s you
I was like in a cloud. This guy, apart from being incredibly sexy, had a very sensual voice, very much like Buddy Holly’s himself and even similar to the Everly Brothers when I heard him on the record. He went on:
You should hear what they say about you (cheat cheat)
They say you never never never ever been true
Oh oh it doesn’t matter what they say
I know I’m gonna love you any old way what can I do
When it’s true
Don’t want nobody nobody
‘cos baby it’s you
He then stopped singing, put the guitar aside and kissed the tip of my nose. Edu groaned and I looked at her in embarrassment. John laughed. I had to try to divert the attention so I asked:
I had to laugh at that. Me? Songs written to me? Oh, yeah, like ‘Diana’ of Paul Anka, ‘Long Tall Sally’ of Little Richard or ‘Lucille’. How would Vicky sound in song? Oh, definitely I didn’t want to discover it!
He got up and walked away from me. Edu had seen the whole scene and was as astonished as myself.
He had his back to me and without looking at me he said:
What?? Had I heard right? He wanted me to leave? But why? What had I done? Oh, no, not now!!
He didn’t reply and Edu said:
We left, but I had this lump in my throat that hardly let me breath. Edu brought me to our room and as soon as we entered through the door I broke down. I started sobbing and weeping and finally cried loudly. I jumped downwards on the bed and Edu was there for me, my lovely friend Edu, who was telling me:
But I couldn’t care less about the explanation. All I wanted was to be alone and forget John. So I spent the rest of the day in the room, without going out and went to bed really early. I woke up the next day with my eyes full of tears. I couldn’t remember if I had dreamt something, but I was sure they were for John. No matter how hard I tried to forget him, John was in my head. Edu wasn’t in the room when I got up. I couldn’t face going to the lounge and find John having breakfast so I decided to stay in the room and wait for Edu. I took the magazine I had bought at the station and started coursing the Beatles. When I couldn’t stand the hunger any more, I went out of the hotel to have something to eat. I spent the day alone and when I went back to the hotel in the late evening to sleep still Edu wasn’t round. I worried a little, but no news is good news, so I opened the door and headed towards the bathroom to get changed. Suddenly I heard a knock on the door. It was a soft knock. I thought it would be Edu so I went to open the door and became face to face to John.
Oh, John was quite serious. Maybe he had something really important to tell me. Where was Edu? Would it be something about Edu? I started panicking and I finally let him in.
How embarrassing! I would have liked to crawl under a stone and die. I covered my breasts with my top the best I could and ran towards the bathroom. I put in the bathrobe and went out. Edu was smiling. I could feel she was happy for me but Brian was quite serious. He said:
John quickly turned to me and I couldn’t understand a word. Who was that Cynthia Brian was talking about? Wouldn’t John...? No, that was not possible. John couldn’t have a girlfriend back in England, could he? He wouldn’t have done the things he had done to me if he had one. I had to find out.
John turned to Brian and if looks could kill Brian would have died right there and then. Edu, very cleverly, took Brian out from there because she guessed John had something to tell me. When we were all alone once again, I repeated my question:
He indicated me with one hand to sit on the bed again. He also sat down.
I could have died right then. That was too much pain to endure. John was married and had a son and I loved him madly. Oh, No, no!! I started crying loudly. John tried to hug me but I wouldn’t let him.
I was really mad at him.
I couldn’t see what explanation that had. He was married and had a son, that’s the end of it. I loved John so much that I felt a little hope in my heart. Maybe he didn’t love his wife. They might have been married for some years now and had grown out tired of each other. So, I let him explain:
Well, that was something, but I felt too humiliated like to forgive him straight away. I needed to talk to Edu and order my thoughts.
Five minutes later Edu came. I told her everything, and she told me Brian had also told her the whole story.
And I couldn’t sleep a wink. I tossed and turned in the bed thinking of John, remembering his warm tongue slipping all over my body, making me feel like nobody had ever made me feel before. He was a master making a girl happy, teasing with my nipples, playing with my navel, caressing my waist, stroking softly my skin with his fingers. But then, the damn image of another girl came to my head. That Cynthia, and John’s son... When I finally drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of a girl doing the same John had done to me but to John, and I was there seeing it all. This girl turned to me every now and then and smiled. Oh, it was a hell of a night.
The next morning, I was waken up by Edu shaking me.
She was right so, against my own thought, I got up and went to the bathroom to follow the same routine of having a shower, cleaning my teeth, applying my make up and getting dressed. When we went to the lounge to have breakfast I looked for John but he was nowhere to be seen. That was better, I didn’t want to see him. He had hurt me so much that I couldn’t see him without feeling my heart break. After breakfast, Edu wanted to go out. I didn’t feel like doing so, so I told her I would stay at the hotel and would phone my parents to tell them everything was alright.
She shrugged it off and went away. I went to look for a telephone box and called my parents. I told them I was OK but I was looking forward to go home. And that was the truth, I wanted to go home and forget about John. I was very happy when I didn’t know him, oh, why did he have to cross my way?. After talking to my brother as well, I went directly to my room and laid on the bed thinking of John. I didn’t realised I had fallen asleep until I was waken up by Edu once more.
I groggily looked at Edu. She was smiling. I sat down in the bed and Edu sat down next to me.
If you ever leave me
I’ll be sad and blue
Don’t you ever leave me
I’m so in love with you...
The birds in the sky will be sad and lonely
If they knew that I lost my one and only
They’ll be sad, ‘cos you’re bad to me.
The leaves on the trees will be softly sighing
If they heard from the breeze that you left me crying
They’ll be sad, don’t be bad to me.
But I know you won’t leave me
‘cos you told me so
and I’ve no intention of letting you go
just as long as you let me know
you won’t be bad to me.
So the birds in the sky won’t be sad and lonely
If they knew that I got my one and only
They’ll be glad you’re not bad to me
They’ll be glad, you’re not bad to me...
Jesus Christ! That was the most beautiful poem that someone could have ever written to me.
We hugged each other. I was so happy!! I loved John madly and he had written a song especially for me. I needed to talk to John immediately and tell him how I felt. He needed to know it. We only had a few days left and I wanted him to know my feelings.
