Concert Review: Finger Eleven w/Cold In Calgary - Jan/23/01
|
After a few hours of impatient waiting both outside the doors, and once we were finally in the Ballroom, the fog machines were turned on to "overkill" mode. It wasn't until the room was a misty jungle that openers Cold decided to make their grand entrance. Well, it would have been grand, but we could only make out their outlines in between the flashes from the strobe lights. That's right kids, you no longer have to stay at home and watch Dragon Ball Z and go into convulsions, now you can try it at rock concerts too!
Even though they weren't exactly my cup of tea, the crowd took them in with open arms, and bounced rowdily to the beats. And since I hadn't even heard of them prior to that night, I was quite shocked to see how many people were singing along and dearly devoted to this band that has been battling endlessly with their tour bus to make it from gig-to-gig. Now I don't know if I'm alone on this, but for all of you horror movie buffs out there, I think the lead singer was pulling a "Nosferatu" look and his bandmate was trying the "Michael Myers." I'm just baffled by who the other three members reminded me of.
Finally, Finger Eleven took the stage. Since they only come to Calgary in two-year intervals, I was more than pleased to see their name as the headliners on my ticket. The set started with "First Time" and they worked their way through 13 other tunes from both Tip and The Greyest Of Blue Skies.
Their cover of Depeche Mode's "Walking In My Shoes" gave the crowd exactly what they wanted, with no doubt about it. Heads were smashed together to the beats. Bodies were tossed over the sea of people and it was an all around good time.
If you didn't limp out of Mac Hall bitching that you survived the pit, or that your shirt was sticking to you with sweat (yours or the persons next to you), then you obviously didn't have a great time.
