Cold
'Year of the Spider' ****

Is this the year of the spider? Cold would have you think so as they break into the mainstream big time with their third

major label release, Year of the Spider. Can you turn on the radio and not hear Stupid Girl right now?

The thing that sticks out the most about Year of the Spider is it is not the typical whoa is me rock that has taken the airwaves the last couple of years. While Scooter Ward may be expressing the same sentiments, "I'm a loner / I'm a loser / I'm a winner in my own mind / I'm a bad one / I'm a good one / I'm a sick one with a smile," its almost as if he is doing so with a smile. Year of the Spider features melodic & compelling hard rock music that leave you with that hook that you will be singing for days.

Whether it is hard hitting tracks like, "Remedy", and "Stupid Girl" or melodic songs like "Cure my Tragedy", "Sad Happy" and "Wasted Years," this is the best Cold album to date and one of the tops of the year so far. Scooter Ward's powerful vocals and deep lyrics give Cold the edge over many of their rock peers. Its nice to see music that actually has something to say these days.
