Cold burns hot: The metal band serves up a fiery Pittsburgh performance

While some bands tour to follow up the debut of an album, others take to the stage to create hype and excitement for their new work. Nu-metal rockers Cold did just that, and stopped in at Nicks Fat City in order to show Pittsburgh what their new disk, Year of the Spider, is all about.

Colds sound is similar to the harder songs on Stainds Break the Cycle and that is their downfall. Unfortunately, in a time when everyone is trying to get in on the profitable Nu-metal market, bands with talent but no uniqueness push through. Like Staind, Cold was discovered and signed by Limp Bizkit front man Fred Durst and soon began recording their first self-titled album released in 1998 without much support. In 2000, Cold released their sophomore effort, 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage, which gave them a significant fan base and a radio-played single, The End of the World.

On April 29, Colds new album, Year of the Spider, will hit stores. The first single, Stupid Girl, is already making its rounds through the radio waves. The show at Nicks Fat City was good, but with only a set list of about 12 songs, there could have been more music, as the band does have three full albums to draw from.

An interesting addition was Colds Kurt (or The Day Seattle Died), which recognizes the bands appreciation for Nirvana and Alice in Chains, and mourns the deaths of their lead singers (by suicide and an overdose, respectively). Colds front man, Scooter Ward, performed in a suit, a trademark of the late Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley during the 1993 Lollapalooza tour, as a way of paying tribute to Staley.

Cold took the time to explain each songs meaning and inspiration; although this is notable, it destroyed the flow that a band should maintain while on stage.

Still, Cold did, without a doubt, rock Nicks Fat City. Each song was backed by the intense energy of the fans, and the small size of the venue was a good foil to the volume of the music. If bands like Staind, Saliva, and even the Deftones are your personal taste in music, then Cold should strike you well, and it will be well worth your time to check out Year of the Spider.
