Her name means Earth Mother. It was a brave sin to strike the earth with an iron implement before March 25th because Mati was pregnant until then. She was a great source of power and strenth to her people. Therefore soil was sacred to them. They swore oaths by eating dirt, or putting dirt on their heads. The Russians honoured Her as supreme. She could prophise how a harvest would turn out. The Russians also guarded Her honour, demanding that anyone who spit on Her apologize immediately.
