Gendenwitha

Iroquois

Her name translates to She who brings the day. Sosondowah (Great Night) was a mighty hunter who was stalking a supernatural elk. The hunt brought him to the heavens. Where the Goddess Dawn enslaved him as her doorkeeper.

Sosondowah saw Gendenwitha, a mortal woman, down on earth. He daily left his duties to court her, while Dawn was busy colouring the sky. He courted his beloved in the form of many different birds and sang to her. As a hawk he tried to carry her to heaven with him. Dawn was angered and turned Gendenwitha into a star. She set her just above Dawn's door, where her lover hunter could not reach her. This is why Gendenwitha is called the morning star.
