First of all, introduce us the marvellous history of Gerbe of Life's
creation?
Hi, here's is Seb of Gol, I sum up the important points of the band's
creation. Christophe(guitar) and myself wanted to create a Grind band
since a long time, but, Christophe was playing in Disgust (French Brutal
Death band). Some times later, they disbanded for several reasons.
We have been speaking for a long time about the creation of our band, and
it occured that we didn't want to play Grindcore only, because at this
time we were really listening to the ensemble of extreme musics. So we
decided to create G.O.L with the following state of mind: not enclosing
ourselves in a given style ( even if Grindcore remains our main
influence).
2°/ Why this strange name, a half in french and a half in english?
We didn't want a common or clich‚ name (as you often can see in Metal).
The name G.O.L naturally came to us during a rehearsal while we were
talking about life and what surrounds it. The name mixing two languages
was choosed to intrigue the peoples of the other countries' metal scene.
3°/ The reading of your lyrics can make us see you're concerned with the
newsreels?
If you've got a minumum of humanity and good sense, how is it possible
that you don't feel concerned with all what happens? We musn't forget we
all belong to an ensemble and we all have got a responsability at our
level.
4°/ Do you think singing in French brings something more to the band about
the message it can express?
I think the fact of singing in French brings something more to Mickael
(our vocalist) because singing in his native language really creates more
impact at the emotionnal level and in the expression of his emotions
during the gigs. All the more, he can emphasize with more precision some
words or some sentences.
Everybody doesn't speak english! I think even fot this reason, the message
has to touch a larger audience. An the fact of singin in french also
avoids an unifomisation of the bands, just listen to bands such as
Brujeria or Rammstein: they sing in their own language and this is not
shocking (at least for me). All the more, it brings a touch of originality
and freshness.

5°/ Are you only into Grindcore or do you also enjoy listening to other
musican styles?
We are really listening to all the kinds of music that exist. It goes from
AC/DC, or Maiden or Death, or also EXHUMED, but also Accept or NILE (
We're listening to some Metal's stuffs since more than 15 years, it
doesn'r rejuvenates us (laughs!!)). But we're also listening to some very
varied things such as: Trip hop, Techno (only the uncommercial, I can
specify!), some new wave, classical music, some third world music, some
celtic music, some 70's bands in the vein of THE WHO or THE DOORS, but
also some pop bands.
6°/ I saw on your site you were searching a guitarist, a bassist, and a
rehearsal place. It seems to be hard, doesn't it?
It has been very hard for a long time, but we actually have found a new
good guitarist and Christophe has switched to the bass. We also have found
a new decent rehearsal place so we're 4 motivated musicians and
everythings are fine at this level.
7°/ It it can encourage you, my band has got exactly the same problems.
But someones say, in these moments you should never lose heart.
I agree with you, but it's easier to say it than to do it! (Especially
when we remind all the bullshits the band had to deal with!).
8°/ What are your projects for the following months?
We're rehearsaling to be ready for the new gigs. We've found a label
called SKULL FUCKED (the same guys who run the French fanzine/ gigs
organisation) and a split CD with another band (to be confirmed yet)
whould be released around august/ september.
9°/ What's your opinion about the Grind scene and the future of extreme
music?
Nevertheless, I've got the feeling the extreme kinds of music are evolving
in round: a lot of bands' names are clich‚, a lot of covers seems so
identical. A lot of bands also have got a tight sound, clean finishings
(even too clean!!), the music is played correctly... but when you listen
carrefully, it's flat at the emotionnal level.! But then some will say
"It's brutal!" or "It kills!" only because it's fast during all the album,
some other peoples will say "Bitch! They've got a great sound, and it's
tight", while the most important is not here.
During the wave of the 90's, there was some fucking good bands that had a
fucking great feeling for writing songs, but at these times everythings
had to be done! Only some bands will be able to redefine the boundnaries
of the musical style, but they are more and more rare!
10°/ Some grind bands of the north of France ( such as Gronibard for
exemple...), are speaking about some really less important subjects than
Gerbe of Life. Do you beling to a same scene? Or are there some real
divergences between these bands, and the others (being more serious)?
To answer your question: I would say we like to be delirious in our lifes,
but the music is something we always have taken seriously. The music is
something we always have taken seriously because we put our guts and our
souls into it; so, from this point the divergences are settings itselves
automatically.
11°/ Do you imagine yourself playing some porno-como Grind such as
Gronibard, one day?
No, simply because this way is not ours.
12°/ Stéphane Buriez (the guitarist of LOUDBLAST who also does a lot of
recordings here in France) is responsible for the recording of the drum
parts of your album, he has also produced the last Disgust's CD "In
aeternum". Would you like to record an album with him?
If we could afford it, why not!
13°/ What will be your final words?
Thanks for the relevance of your questions, and it's also cool that you
showed some interest into what the band's doing. See you another time,
maybe. Seb (GOL).)
