What is the purpose to teach our children Chinese overseas, when it seems not so important to them compared to their present environment.
- The sense of loss among my friends from my school days in the west coast, who are second or even first generation immigrants.
- To fortify the sense of belonging and maintain ties between children and parents.
- To instill the pride of being a Chinese in our children.
The common problems and obstacles in our children's learning of Chinese overseas.
- It's extra work!
- There is no adequate environment to learn the culture and practice the language.
What can we, the parents, do to encourage and help our children?
- Be an example. Speak Chinese to them all the time!
- Encourage and make them to go to Chinese School.
- Get involved with the Chinese School activities and closely supervise children's learning at home.
- Be proud of being a Chinese yourself!
