Some Problems in Oil Drilling IndustryDr. Ping C. Sui 隋平群 博士
摘要: Armageddon: The Drilling Bit that Saves the Earth For those who love the action movie must enjoy this summer hit - "Armageddon". This movie is a scientific fiction about a group of brave men destroying a meteor that is on course to collide with the mother Earth. These brave men take a space shuttle to land on the meteor. Then, they drill holes into the meteor, which has a core of extremely high hardness, and place the dynamites deep inside to ignite the explosions. Although the movie may be fictitious; however, the technology in drilling through the hard core meteor is certainly not. The drilling bit industry is a small but very proprietary business. Its primary business is to support the drilling for oil wells, mines, and underground constructions, etc. The drilling bit is designed to overcome corrosion, abrasion, and high temperature, and other extremely hostile working environment. To achieve this goal, the simple-and-dull looking drilling bit actually exploits many state-of-the-art techniques and the most expensive materials in today's production. In this presentation, the author will give a brief introduction on the type of the drilling bit used today and some current technology adopted for manufacturing the drilling bit. This is the technology that used to access the fossil fuel to provide power for today's civilization. This is also the technology that used to save the Earth for tomorrow's civilization. Have any doubts? Then, may be you should watch the movie "Armageddon".
簡歷: Dr. Ping C. Sui received his Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1989. After that, he joined Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) at San Antonio, Texas and worked for the Engine Design Department till 1998. During this period, he was dedicated to the tribological research and development for the powertrain system of gasoline and diesel engines. His technical contributions to the engine industry made him the recipient of the Arch T. Colwell Merit Award of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in 1997. He is also the Coordinator of the Automotive Bearing Committee for SAE. In 1998, Dr. Sui joined Security DBS Division of Halliburton Energy Service in Dallas, Texas as a Senior Consultant. The focus of his current research is on the reliability/durability improvement for drilling bit system. |
