Internet Telephony
Mr. D. L. Shen 沈東立 Sr. System Analyst, Tech. Training & Support, US Courts, San Antonio, TX

摘要:
Internet Telephony (or IP Telephony) is an emerging technology that allows voice communications to take place over Internet. By using this technology, two Internet users can talk to each other across the world without incurring expensive long distance telephone charges. Equally possible is conference call over Internet. At least two types of Internet Telephony are being pursued and products of such are available on the market these days. One is PC to PC voice communications over Internet. The second type of IP telephony involves IP Telephony Gateway Servers. It is quite feasible now for an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) to offer Internet-based long distance telephone services to consumers at much lower rates than those charged by long distance telephone carriers. Alarmed, America's Carriers Telecommunications Association filed a petition last year before the FCC to ban Internet telephony software. While FCC is believed not to regulate Internet telephony as yet, this new-born technology has already spurred the decade long debate over how much of Internet should be free and really is free in terms of Internet Economics to escalate to a higher level.
