    Computer Networking

    Dr. W. T. Chen 陳文澤
Sr. Engineer, System Design and Architecture, IBM Corp., Austin, TX

    摘要:

Networking has become an integral part of the computer computing and its application environments. Computers communicate with each other in today's computing environment to share resources and information. In this presentation, networking technologies for connecting computers will be described. The wide area networking technologies, such as T1, T3, ATM, Frame Relay, ISDN, cable modem, ADSL, and etc., provides corporate and home users to link (and connects to) computers at dispersed locations. The local area networking technologies, such as ethernet, token ring, FDDI, ATM, and etc., provide high-bandwidth interconnects for systems to communicate with higher speed over a shorter distance. For the WAN cases, the communication speed is traded for providing communication over longer distance.

Upper layer networking protocols, e.g. TCP/IP suite, provides the application user interface for applications and its users to communicate with remote systems withour having to be bogged down by details of the underlining networking media/technologies. With proliferation of Internet connectivity, web-based (and Internet-based) applications, such as e-commerce, and etc. are the trend in today's networked computing environments. Java and its environments promised the paradigm of "write-once, run everywhere" for developers/end users to take better advantage of the networked world. The upper-lever communication protocols and applications for network computing will also be briefed in this presentation.
