Community Work . . .

The Saco Bay Gardening Club donated proceeds from our 2003 Garden Tour to Dyer Library for the purchase of a large collection of new gardening books for both adult circulation and the Children's Room.  The subjects include perennials, landscaping, reference books, roses, wildflowers, and gardening projects for children.  Many of the titles are specific to New England and Northern climates.  We encourage you to "check out" these great books.  Club members who are not residents of Saco are allowed to check out the titles without paying a non-resident library fee.

In 2004, we were able to match that donation for McArthur Library in Biddeford.  Many new titles were added to their gardening section--most are different than the books purchased for Dyer.  The SBGC is proud of these new collections and hopes they will be of reference to all gardeners in the area, as well as inspire new gardeners to take up the trowel.

The SBGC plans to continue supporting our local libraries, with more funds earmarked for both Dyer and McArthur.  Following our successful plant sale this past spring, we pledged $400 for new acquisitions to McArthur and $400 in matching funds for Heart of Biddeford, to help with their downtown beautification program.

Grounds Renovation at Dyer Library/Saco Museum. . .

The club does basic maintenance and clean-up throughout the growing season on the grounds of Dyer Library.  The summer of 2006 we planted a coleus collection in the shady area near the Children's Room entrance.  Next summer we will plan another themed garden there.

With the new "Doors for Dyer" construction completed, and basic landscaping in place, SBGC will be looking for ways to enhance the grounds even further in the future.
