So, Welcome to SackHoullier.co.uk. a site dedicated to those who want to see Liverpool play some good football every now and then. Anyway, on with the site. As anyone who's been watching Liverpool for any length of time will know, Houllier came along when we were in dire need of some emergency treatment - and in that respect he was fantastic for the club. We got solid at the back, won a few trophies, and started to get respected across the UK and Europe again. Thanks for all that Gerrard.
But now, it's become plain that this is about as far as he's going to take us. And even if by some ridiculous quirk of fate we did manage to fluke the league, it would be the worst footballing team to win it since the gooners robbed it from us in '89. Another couple of decisions have started to get me down, too. The sale of Stephen Wright when we kept Traore and Xavier. GH said that 'the people of Liverpool wouldn't care if eleven Martians were playing if we won the league'. Well I would. We've lost four scousers to this attitude, McManaman, Thompson, Fowler and Wright - and before we start pointing at GH's otherwise great transfer record, remember that for every Hyypia there's a couple of Biscans, for every Henchoz there's one or two Diomedes. GH has been in management for thirty years, during which time he has won just one top flight championship, back in ’86 with Paris St Germain. He was there for four years, won the championship in his second season and these were his unimpressive stats over the period: Played 114, won 49, drawn 33, lost 32. Importantly, the final year he was there, these were his stats: Played 23, won 6, drawn 9, lost 8. A considerable drop in form. Then he managed to fail to get the French national team to qualify for the world cup, and in typical school teacher style proceeded to blame everything on one of his players, David Ginola. Anyway, failure to qualify cost him his job and four years later they were World Champions. Now I'm not stupid, he was doing something right, they say his technical expertise was phenomenal when he became technical director and he was great at spotting good young talent and nurturing it. Good, then he can do that at Liverpool and leave someone else to get on with the coaching and picking the team. Anyway, I'm not going to preach, I'm just interested in what people have to say on the subject. Would you rather we played more attractive football? Let me know, sign the board: RANT This board is in it's infancy, but if you have anything you'd like included on the site, email to [email protected]. Oh yeah, for all those who are saying, yeah, but who would we get? I suppose I need suggestions for that. I'll kick it off and say top my list would by John Toshack. There've been a load of people on the message board dissing me for this - and I'd like to know why specifically he would be bad for Liverpool, in your opinion. Mail me. Anyway, I think he's been there, seen it, done it and he's red through and through. Took Swansea from the 4th division to the top flight in four seasons, won the league with Real Madrid in 1990 and then came back to win the Champions League with them in '98, is known by the French as the 'saviour of St Etienne', has won the Spanish cup with Deportivo taking them from nowhere to runners up in the league, has had a few spells at Real Sociedad, and has managed in Turkey and Italy too. And his teams attack now and again. Loads of people have mentioned O'Neill, but my problem with him is his lack of being a true red. I do think that he'd be a great manager for us - but I can't see why he'd be loyal. *****************************************************
