moonlight phantom

Moonlight Phantom

by Sachie

Relena stood by the window in a darkened room and looked up to the
full moon shining overhead. The moonlight was bright enough to cast a
faint shadow behind her, and the gardens below seemed bathed in an
otherworldly glow.
She'd gone to bed hours ago, but had been unable to sleep somehow.

"Maybe its the moon," thought Relena.

A sudden noise almost made her jump. A light tapping sound like
something hitting the window. Relena leaned against the glass and
looked down.

A solemn figure in a green tanktop and black spandex shorts gazed back
at her.

"Heero?" Relena quickly threw on a robe, and opened the window as
quietly as she could.

"Heero!" she called out to him in a loud whisper. She didn't want
any of the servant to know that she had a nocturnal visitor. "What
are you doing here?"

"I wanted to see you," said Heero. He neither smiled nor changed his
characteristically stoic expression in any other way, but Relena
thought she saw a glimmer of emotion in his eyes she had never seen
before.

"Wait!" said Relena. Although Heero had made no motion to leave,
Relena couldn't help thinking that he would disappear at any moment
without warning. "I'm coming down. Please, wait for me."

When she arrived in the garden no more than a minute or so later,
slightly breathless, Heero was still there. He held a large pale
blossom in his hand which he shyly presented to her. It was a peony.

"Thank you," said Relena, she touched the delicate ruffled petals with
her finger. "Its beautiful."

"Not as beautiful as you."

Relena looked up to see dark blue eyes searching into her. Her heart
was beating double time, and not just because she's run down the
stairs two and three at time to get here.

"Heero." He was standing so close, she could feel the heat radiating
from his body. "Why are you here, Heero?"

"I told you before, I wanted to see you." Heero shifted his gaze,
reached out to capture of strand of honey blonde hair between his
fingers and pressed it to his lips.

"I love you, Relena."

There was a moment of silence, unbroken except for the soft sighing of
the wind in the trees. Relena took a deep breath and tried to calm
her mind. Something was wrong here.

"Who are you?" she said at last. The boy who stood before her wasn't
Heero. It was obvious to her now. He looked like Heero, he sounded
like Heero. But it couldn't be Heero. Heero didn't love her. At
least, not yet.

"I'm Heero Yuy. The man who loves you." He reached out to touch her
cheek, but Relena shied away. She thought she saw an expression of
hurt cross his face.

"No, you're not Heero." Relena said firmly. "Heero's not like this.
Heero doesn't love me."

"He does. Part of him does. I'm that part. I'm the Heero Yuy that
loves you."

"I don't understand."

"I'm not sure I do either. When I went to sleep tonight, I was only a
part of Heero Yuy, one aspect of his personality. But when I woke, I
saw the full moon in the sky, and Heero sleeping in front of me.
Somehow, I'd manage to break free. My only thought was that I had to
see you. I had to be with you."

"So, you _are_ Heero."

"Aa." Heero nodded.

"And you love me?"

Heero's only answer was to take Relena's hand and press it to his
heart, but in his eyes was such an expression of passion and longing
that it took Relena's breath away.

"I love you too, Heero," she whispered.
