Killeen Gears Up
By Robert Fidgeon

GRETEL Killeen is feeling a "little bit odd". It is something of a problem because Big Brother is due to launch on Monday and she is about to head off for a few days in East Timor on behalf of UNICEF, before BB starts.

But she has a stomach bug and isn't a well bunny.

"I think the second series of Big Brother is going to be every bit as exciting as the first," says the mother of two, who discovered stardom as host of the show.

Asked what the first series did for her, Killeen responds that she feels it made her a "more well-rounded human being".

"I've always felt we were the sum of the challenges we meet through life," she says.

"When you take on and conquer one challenge, you're more confident about taking on another. It opens up new horizons. On a personal level, it's been interesting to see what that celebrity thing means to many people.

"It's been wonderful meeting people and to see they just like knowing someone who's been on television."

Hosting the show undoubtedly gave her confidence and brought her a "lot of affection from the public".

"I also think I've got my feet very firmly on the ground because of it," she says.

"You can either spend a very long time being distracted by the to-ing and fro-ing of other people's dreams, or you can actually refine it and think: 'thanks very much, but this is the direction I'm going in'."
