| Pescara is a fishing port and fantastic sea resort on the Adriatic, offering excellent clean beaches and hotels. It has a long history and was named by the Romans when they conquered it in 214 B.C. Today it has a population of about 120,000 inhabitants. Pescara's most famous one was the italian poet-patriot Gabriele D'Annunzio, born there in 1863. Pescara is the chief town of the region Abruzzo, a region that covers almost 4.000 square miles and has a population of about 1 million inhabitants. It has got some of the most beautiful and varied countrysides of Italy, with its acres of land covered in vineyards and olive trees, with its fantastic beaches and stunning mountains. The rich culture and history of the area is visible in the citadels and castels nestled all over the region. Pescara provides access to many cities down the east coast of Italy, including Ancona, Bari,Vasto,Foggia,Brindisi and Lecce,by the excellent train connections from Ancona's station. AIRPORT Pescara's Airport is situated about 4 kilometres from the heart of the city of Pescara. It is directly linked to the city's road system and the motorway network, making it very easy to reach some of the most important cities in Italy such as Rome(150km),Ancona(156km),L'Aquila(90km),and Naples(280km). BUS Buses from the Airport to the Central Railway Station depart every 10 minutes(from 05:30 to 23:30).The journey takes about 10 minutes and costs just under EUR 1.Frequent public and private bus and coach services are available daily to all the major cities in Italy. RAIL Pescara's railway station is consedered one of Europe's most modern and efficent. Services to Rome take just 3 hours. PLACES TO VISIT The Pescara's Jazz Festival is a fantastic event held every summer that attracts some of the greatest Jazz musicians from around all the world. Then, there is the National Park of Abruzzo, that was established at the beginning of the 20th century and today covers an area of 44,000 hectares, including 22 towns in the provinces of L'Aquila,Frosinone and Isernia. Almost all of these towns have Tourist Information's centre where informations about the best way to enjoy the park are available. The park has some incredibly beautiful lanscapes and is home to bears, chamois, wolves, deer and eagles. Very important is also the church of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, in L'Aquila, that has a magnificient pink-and-white stone faade and the only Holy Door in Christendom outside of Rome.It is a great place to visit and has a spectacular gothic interior. L'Aquila's castle is one of Italy's best 16th-century fortresses and is extremely well preserved. It gives great views of the area and is home to the National Museum of Abruzzo. About business, the main products of Pescara's industries include refined sulphur, glass, furniture, dyes and alcohol. There is a working fishing port and tourism is important to the local economy.Pescara is also home to a market of floriculture products that are of international importance. Also important is the industrial growth with textile, clothing, shoes, furniture and food productions. And Pescara has also many fine restaurants and trattorie where fish and seafood is artistically served according to the most delicious recipes of maritime Abruzzo, the traditional ice-cream shops, where superb ice-cream creations can be enjoyed in a highly elegant surroundings a little distance from the shopping streets of the center;and of course without leaving everyone takes the time to buy the traditional Parrozzo, the delicate Pescarese cake based on almonds and covered in chocolate. I conclude with some informations on the climate or, more likely,"climates",as Abruzzo has two climates:maritime and continental. The annual average temperature varies from 8-12 in the mountainous area to 12-16 in the maritime area;in both areas, though, the differences between maximum and minimum temperature can be considerable. In the Summer the average temperature of both areas are similar:24/30 on the coast,20/25 in the interior. |
