Constitutional changes in 1931 and 1946 granted the Ceylonese a measure of autonomy and a parliamentary form of government. Ceylon became a self-Government. Ceylon became a self –governing dominion of the British Commonwealth  on February 4, 1948. On May 22 , 1972, the Ceylonese adopted a new constitution which declared Ceylon to be the Republic of Sri Lanka – ‘Resplendent Island’. Sri Lanka is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
