With this picture, Screenwriter Davies and director Rossen created one of the cinema most authentic depiction of war. It is certainly the best picture about the Korean war. The story centers on a bomber pilot ( Holden) and his crew, part of an aircraft carrier force assigned to destroy vital North Korean bridges.
Kelly is Holden wife and their scenes are electric. The film was one of the first   Color film for Holden.

The film focuses on the impact made by a muscle-flexing vagrant  on the  women of a sleepy Kansas town on a Labor Day , especially at the annual picnic.
Holden, his chest shaved both to minimize his sexuality and to make him look younger, is the vagrant. His  sultry, suggestive dance with Novak was memorable .
The film was a huge box-office success
