The Anniversary


She stroked the soft fur of her old cat, standing in the window, with the fading sunlight danced over his back. The golden light was to make up for the loss of her golden hair. "Well, Felix, do you know what to-day is?" she asked, in her hoarse, quiet voice.

The cat purred.

"It's been six years since Felix went away. It's been six years to-day. But I have a finer Felix now, don't I?" She stroked him again. "Don't I? You're my lovely one now."

The cat gave a soft miau, jumped off the window-sill, and stepped proudly out of the room.
