Once Upon a Time

Written for Petra.

The songs of the old days
Are nearly gone
And it's impossible to tell
Into which cloud
They've
Barricaded themselves

The golden dream that inspired us
And drew followers,
Drew disciples
And
Called us unto itself
Has hidden somewhere
And taken the map
With it

There was a star-spattered night
Into which a woman held her palms
And watched silver flow
Through her fingers
She caught chips of moon
Under her fingernails
And bits of far-off worlds
Sank into her fingerprints

There was a rainbow-drenched waterfall
She stood inside and
Felt colours pour onto her shoulders
Bathing her in sapphires and lavenders
Ruby and clove-scented orange
Emerald and melted-sun yellow
Twisting together but not
Slurring together
Ropes of rainbow
Coiling about her

But the night and the waterfall have gone far away
To live in caves of eternity
To be sought but never found

Dreamily, sunrises and sunsets turn
And every now and then, we remember
The dreams, they led us
And the songs,
They were ever sung
